Shantaram Part One
Crime and punishment, passion and loyalty, betrayal and redemption are only a few of the ingredients in Shantaram, a massive, over-the-top, mostly autobiographical novel. Shantaram is the name given Mr. Lindsay, or Linbaba, the larger-than-life hero. It means "man of God's peace," which is what the Indian people know of Lin. What they do not know is that prior to...more

Have you ever been in a relationship that you were just done with but you were hoping they would end it and so you suffer through, day after day, rolling your eyes every time that person does that THING that you HATE and, yah, it was kind of fun at first but if they keep doing that THING that you HATE, you are going to end up saying something really mean and you really don't want to do that because they mean well and are nice but they just drive you up the wall?

This book has lots of teachings which one should have his/her own copy because it is a very personal ride one takes with this book. You have to underline the sentences that touched your heart and you should go back to it to understand yourself better. The war part was very hard reading for me, but overall i did love this book. It was a suggestion from a good friend of mine and I do suggesst everyone to read it for sure- and to finish it ofcourse!
this book is a quasi-autobiographical story about a guy who escapes from prison in australia and ends up living in a slum in india and being part of organised crime there and smuggling guns into afghanistan. it was very interesting, but it was so frickin' long that at the later stages i just wanted it to end. i also could've done without the descriptions of him gouging a guy's eye out, for example. i was hoping it would finish with him being recaptured, but apparently he's saving that for a sequ...more
This is a novel that is hard to put down even though almost too heavy to lift. My copy doesn't say part one, just a novel of 936 pages that may or not be an autobiography. His tale is almost unbelievable but whether fiction or real life some very intersting insights into living and a good sense of India.
One of the best books I've ever read. It's an adventure, a love story, a thriller, dark, light, love, hate, hope, hopeless, fear, courage - it's an epic with just about everything in it you can imagine. Loved it.
The first half of this book deserves a solid 5-star. The voice -- intelligent and unusual. The characters -- complex, lovable and humorous. The plot -- uncommon. The setting -- India, the one place that I was not interested in. Culturally I was hooked. But when the fellow got to the Indian prison, I lost the vibe. The last half of the book deserves only 3.5-stars, but that is because I really do not enjoy crime stories. I admit that during the second half of the book I was fascinated wi...more
One of the very best books I have ever read. The writing is so good I am anxious to travel to India, a place I had never wanted to go. He even makes the slums sound fascinating.
Great reading, until about page 500, when it still would have been great reading if it had been page 1. Seemed to drag on in a redundant sort of way.
I don't have the words to describe how incredible this man's journey is, get the book and read it--it's life altering
Loved this book!!!! Each page is such an adventure! Definatly One of top three reads!!

still reading it- I am enjoying learning about life in India.
so far.. only about 200 pages in but i am LOVING it!!
This is a long read, but well worth it.
Arguably. the best book I've ever read.
Love. I recommend it to everyone.
I have different opinions with regards to each aspect of Shantaram on audio. The reader, Humphrey Bower, is quite possibly the best narrator I’ve ever encountered. On the other hand, though, I didn’t find myself reveling in particularly stunning passages as many of Shantaram‘s readers have. I didn’t like Lin and wasn’t much compelled to care too deeply about him.

Audio book that paints full picture of India. The reader is an actor & voices are very good.
Loved it, amazing story!
I am thoroughly enjoying reading this book.
Having been to India, I can relate to the authors descriptions so intensely, I can almost taste the words as they flow off the pages.
Truly a delicious read..
I'm about a third of the way through, and will post some more comments as I go along...
I am at chapter 25 now, and I am scared the book is going to come to an end soon!

I listened to this from the library and made it to tape 23. One of these days I'll finish it. A tale of a supposed true nature about an australian who flees to India after escaping prison who ends up running guns, forging passports and slipping into the seedy life of India. It's wonderful to listen to it on tape as it's quite long and you get to hear the wonderful nuances of "Indianisms" being spoken. Supposed to be a film with Johnny Depp coming. Cant wait till that happens.
THe audio CD enhances an already wonderful book. Robert's semi-autobiographical story is amazing - both the story it tells and the author's skill at telling it. But the narrator puts this over the top. He's so skillful doing the different voices and accents. So many times during the book, I'd have to tell myself it was the same person who just read those two lines - you just get drawn into the story so much!
Probably the BEST novel I have ever read...and I have read hundreds!!
An interesting read. At times I was captivated, at others, bored. Lin lived in the dark underbelly of the world.
4-star rating is an average = 5-star performance by the actor but 3-star writing by the author. The actor was a mesmerizing narrator and did the voices for each character so differently. His portrayal of Prabaker was hilarious. The story is amazing and compelling, but Mr. Roberts needed better editing since he indulged in purple prose.
I invested 48 hours into this epic novel! It was worth the listen (mostly).
The novel was rich in hope and meaning. It covers the life Gregory David Roberts with a mostly faithful description of his life as a fugitive in Bombay.
The story is very long. I never got bored though.

This book had a bit of everything and it is now on the top shelf with all my favorites.

Gosh, this is an amazing story. It is riveting reading. If you like stories from India, this book gives you insight into the life and people of India like nothing I have ever read before. A must read
I couldn't convince myself to pass page 200. I said to myself enough is enough, this is a waste of time. A thin story told by a shallow person.
So far i have really been enjoying this book! Its taught me alot about Indian culture too w/ a great story line.

I'm listening to this as I walk. It's over 43 hours long so I'll track a lot of miles before it's finished.
