I have finally finished this book. It’s 510 pages and takes a while to read. ( I see the latest edition runs to 800 pages, must be much bigger print!) The author’s style is not really to my taste, far too much attention to fine detail. People don’t just undress, there is a list of every item removed! This, no doubt, is to convey the amount of historical research that has been carried out.

I persevered with the book because,
• The plot line was quite enthralling.
• The history of the South Wales C

I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of this book. Then I became frustrated with this family's tribulations - some of which they bring upon themselves, though the author indulged them into blaming others. The book ends where the author becomes bored with this family and does not know how to end the story, so she lets the story dangle unfinished in mid-air...
