I think I enjoyed this one a little more than the first. Now that the set up of Agatha's move to the village is over we can jump right into village life and the next murder. Loved Agatha scaring off James when she'd get too eager and the scene with her destroying the ladies room in the pub trying to cover up a blemish on her nose had me chuckling while reading the whole scene. Agatha is a great character, prickly enough to be interesting but with sometimes seen softer side that keeps her likable...more
As with a few other reviews I have made the purpose of this review is more so to share my immediate opinion of what I have read of the series rather than to give a detailed account of what this particular story is about. I have not kept up with the series however so unfortunately I do no know the current fate of Agatha Raisin!
With that said, the tales of Agatha Raisin are another series that I picked up many, many years ago (the early 2000s). I had mostly stumbled into reading mystery books with...more

After reading many glowing reviews of the Agatha Raisin series, I was pleased to find a copy of this book for 50c at our local thrift store. I just read it in a couple of days, but that does not mean that it was so gripping that I could scarcely put it down. It was because it's not that long a book, and I wanted to get to the end so I could find something more interesting to read.

Second in the Agatha Raisin mystery series set in the Cotswolds and revolving around a retired advertising executive, Agatha Raisin, who is bored out of her tiny mind.
The Story
Agatha has a new neighbor, the very distinguished James Lacey, in place of that old Mrs. Barr and Agatha is after the poor man like white on rice. Fortunately for James, a new vet, Paul Bladen, shows up as well, whom Agatha goes after. Unfortunately, the new vet gets murdered and James and Agatha join up to find out whodun...more

M.C. Beaton has created a strong character in Agatha raisin, and I really like her honesty. Although this does get her into trouble. If you like cosy crime you will like this book.
Authors blurb:
"- 'Anyone interested in a few hours' worth of intelligent, amusing reading will want to make the acquaintance of Mrs. Agatha Raisin.' - The Cleveland Pain Dealer - 'Agatha Raisin is sharp, witty, hugely intelligent, unfailingly entertaining, delightfully intolerant and oh so magnificently non PC. I haven’t read the first book in this series so I do think I was missing a little bit of background on Agatha, honestly I’m not sure what I thought of her, some things I learned about her in this book, she is looking for a man, she thinks every man should fall in love with her and she wants to wear a bikini. Now this last one had me confused because the narrator of this book sounded older and I’m not sure how old Agatha is supposed to be but certain things she does and says didn’t feel right for...more
Not as entertaining as the first one, I still like Agatha Raisin as a character. She's all tough on the outside, but vulnerable on the inside (and still wishing for some romance). And it is this combination that makes her funny. On this second outing, a veterinarian was found dead--initially ruled out as accident--but was reclassified as murder after another person died under suspicious circumstances. Of course, everyone wanted to believe that the two deaths were unrelated and that they're both...more

Sempre molto divertente.
In this second installment of the Agatha Raisin series, Agatha has just returned home from the Bahamas. When she found out that her neighbor, James Lacey, was planning a vacation there, Agatha decided to book a trip as well in the hopes that the "chance" meeting would result in some sparks! To her dismay, Agatha found out that James caught wind of her plans and changed his itinerary so that he could ditch her. He went to Egypt instead.

Second in the highly popular Agatha Raisin murder mystery series The highly irrepressibly Agatha feels sure the attractive new village vet has taken a shine to her, yet before romance can blossom, Dr Bladen accidentally kills himself in an unfortunate incident involving a horse and a needle. Ah well, his death serves as an excuse for her to become chummier with her neighbour James Lacey as once more they are thrown together in an amateur murder investigation...

Very disappointed. I quite enjoyed the first but just found this one really annoying. Agatha is a charmless character who irritated me beyond belief. The author can't seem to decide what sort of personality she is. One minute she's a tough no-nonsense PR exective making grown men tremble, the next she's crying over the pettiest of things. All her mooning over James Lacey was really annoying too and some of the jams she found herself in weren't funny, just plain embarrassing. Plus why do we have...more
Truth be told,I haven't read an "Agatha" book yet(and I have read the whole series) that hasn't kept me amused and entertained. Our heroine is a 50-plus detective, living in a village in England, who finds herself in the most amazing predicaments. She has two lovers and deals with middle age issues like the dreaded "hairs in strange places." I started reading this series in my 30's and loved the fact that a woman in her 50's could still have fun, friends, and that naughty S** word! I might just go...more
Until recently Agatha Raisin was a feisty London public-relations executive, she mistakenly believes the new village vet has taken a shine to her, but before romance can bloom Dr Paul Bladen accidently kills himself under suspicious circumstances while attending to Lord Pendlebury,s horse.Oh well there,s still her distinguished neighbor, James Lacey, a retired military man who,s been playing hard to get. thugh numerous village ladies are devastated by Dr .Bladens, death, other people including h...more
Agatha Raisin and the Vicious Vet is the second book in the Agatha Raisin mystery series by M.C. Beaton. It does not disappoint. Agatha continues in her rampage-pursuing love and friends and Beaton continue to provide many laughs with her odd and oddly difficult characters who live, not altogether peacefully, in the picturesque English village of Carsley. The mystery was good and the relationships interesting and it did make me laugh-out-loud.

"You wouldn't think when you drive through these pretty Cotswold villages how much terror and passion and anger can lurk beneath the beams of these old cottages," said constable Bill Wong. How true! Because one would believe it if one follows the adventures of Agatha the retired PR executive, now putative Private Investigator in Carsley. In this, the second in the series (and it might help if they are read in order, although it is not imperative as I haven't and still manage) Agatha follows up a...more
I really love this crotchety middle aged woman named Agatha. She makes me smile and laugh because she just says it like it is. She recently retired from public relations and is finding that she's quite bored. After her first successful attempt at solving a murder she gets a bit of an over-inflated ego and believes she's the only one who can find out the answer as to who wanted the local veterinarian dead. The plus side for her (she has a mad wild crush on James) is that her neighbor, retired mil...more
Second in the Agatha Raisin series. Agatha is still finding it difficult to adjust to retirement in the England Cotswolds. She has not been accepted into the inner circle of the Ladies Aid Society and James Lacey, the retired military officer who lives next door, has not responded to her obvious interest and overtures. So when Agatha hears that the new Vet in the area is single and attractive, her cat, Hodge, is quickly taken in for an examination. You guessed it. The Vet is found dead soon afte...more
Agatha Raisin and the Vicious Vet is the third book in the series that I have read, and I must say that this series continues to be a fun read. Beaton delivers a fun, humourous, enjoyable tale that is a quick read. Agatha finds herself intrigued by the handsome new single vet, who ends up dying under suspicious circumstances as far as she is concerned. When Agatha takes the case, she finds herself helped by her handsome single neighbor, James. Full of twists and turns, Beaton delivers another de...more
I enjoyed this second book in the Agatha Raisin series more than the first. (Quiche of Death). Agatha's character is, for me, just a bit too blunt and rude to be realistic - maybe I just know too many nice people!
However, in this second book the author shows Agatha's marshmallow side more often, her vulnerability and insecurity over her efforts to 'hook' her neighbour James Lacey.

The death this time is of a vet who is new to the village and is not very good with dogs and cats. He is good with women though and likes to butter them up with a view to relieving them of cash. His death is followed by that of the local librarian ( one of the women he had targeted). Agatha uses the investigation to get closer to her dishy neighbour James, but blows it every time she shows her eagerness for a relationship.

These Agatha Raisin audio books are a guilty pleasure of mine. The mysteries are far from difficult. The characters are two-dimensional at best. The writing is, at times, irritatingly bad (Is there anything more irritating than an author who switches point of view back and forth from sentence to sentence?). But, the narrators are superb.

Agatha Raisin is hilarious! I liked this installment even better than the The Quiche of Death.
After her successful first murder investigation, Agatha tries to settle down in her quiet village in the Cotswolds. To her disappointment, James Lacey, her single neighbour seems to be avoiding her and an old business partner turns out a fraud when he tries to swindle her savings out of her. So naturally, when a new handsome vet opens a surgery in the village, Agatha senses her chance for adventure. Th...more

This second installment in the Agatha Raisin series was twice as nice as the first one!
Agatha is settling into Cotswold life and is hot for her neighbor, James. She is alternating between luring him into her clutches and turning him off in revulsion. When a new veterinarian comes to town, Agatha trades the objects of her affections for this new man-prey. When the vet turns up dead, Agatha uses it as an excuse to spend more time with James. Now, they're both on the case of the killer.

Recommends it for:
Mystery fans
This is a short piece of cozy mystery brain candy. It's a quick, fun read and although I've only read the first two books in the Agatha Raisin series, I think I'm hooked. I'll probably have to bounce back and forth between our beloved Hamish Macbeth series and this one, but I'm looking forward to reading them all.

I found the first book in this series, Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death, amusing enough to get the second adventure from the library. Unfortunately, this is exactly the same book as the first, only without any funny parts.

I stumbled into the Agatha Raisin series earlier this year, when I picked up book 26 from the new releases shelf at the library. I wasn't crazy about Agatha, but decided to try earlier books. I was about to give up when I got this one, #2. I enjoyed it much more, and will be going back to book one and reading the stories in order.
The scene in the pub with the sink and the blemish concealer cracked me up and James Lacey, as far as I am concerned, is a big turd.

I'm still not sold on Agatha. I was hoping to like her character better with the second book, but instead I like her a bit less for all her lovelorn man-chasing. Maybe that is supposed to make her more realistic, but one can't deny that Beaton goes to great pains to make her seem unattractive as a person. To make her man-crazy on top of that seems to be one unattractive quality too many. Having said this, the actual mystery was very good. Once again, I didn't uncover the mystery until Beaton was...more
1993: I am not sure why I enjoy these books so much. The eponymous heroine is just wonderful. All bluff and bravado but learns a lesson every now and then. The supporting characters are equally well developed and some parts of this book had me laughing allowed - especially the bit when she managed a lunch date with her next door neighbout and managed to be nearly arrested for wilful vandalism. Just a wonderful story!! Bit like Cabot Cove, though. Wouldn't like to live in the area....
I didn't finish this. I thought it was trite and poorly written. The narrative was just that, narrative. It didn't grab me, or hold me and I found Agatha extremely annoying. The plot was all over the place and we didn't even get to the mystery until about a third of the way through after a collection of irrelevancies. Not my cup of tea, but loads of readers obviously love it because Agatha Raisin books proliferate. I won't be reading any more.
