I finished Terry McMillan's The Interruption of Everything tonight. This is definitely a page-turner. It's a universal story. It's not full of cliches or male bashing or gratuitous sex (I hate that that's what I expected from her, but it sorta was). It's not sugar-coated or exaggerated. It's just real. If we all live long enough we'll experience many of the things these characters do: that mid-life thing they say men go through, menopause, caring for our parents in their old age, empty nesting. ...more

An enjoyable read. The novel is funny, laced with witty dialogue, great subplots, a few surprises, and unforgettable characters, especially her niece and her mother-in-law, Athurine. Her relationship with Authurine (mother-in-law) and eventually Prezelle, was endearing. She went to church with her and they held hands, she bought new modern jogging suits for her to walk the malls and look good for her boyfriend. I loved it! But, I wanted to know more about the relationship between Marilyn and Gor...more

As a devoted Terry McMillan fan, I was one of the very first to buy her latest read - The Interruption of Everything. Her new character is torn between her obligations to family and her obligations to self. In the middle years of her life, she reflects on where she's been, where she is and where she wants to go. She realizes that her husband, who is experiencing some serious mid-life crisis issues, is finding himself and that her children are moving on into adulthood; she, too, must find hers...more

This started out strong and funny and steadily deteriorated. It is about the typical middle-aged issues (menopause, empty nest, etc.). (I listened to it on audio.) It is written like a script in that it is all dialogue and went from being smart and witty to excessive use of the f-word (which usually indicates a lack of creativity to me)...picked up again a bit towards the end, but a lot of it was so predictable. It is just a mid-life issues story with some African American flavor.

This is a story of a 40 something black woman who has a lot of things going on in her life--a sickly mother, a drug-addict sister with kids, her own kids in college, her daughter pregnant, a failing marriage, searching for fulfillment, dealing with peri-menopause...but it was all so believable. I listened to the audio book and the narrator was awesome and could really put on a great voice for the various characters. Great story!

Marilyn Grimes is just trying to get through life. She has a husband in the midst of a mid-life crisis, a crazy sister, and dreams of a career pushed aside for her family. A lot of what Marilyn is going through seems very much age-based (menopause, a long marriage with the romance dwindling) but I still had no problem relating to her. Even though she deals with some serious issues, this book is also really, really funny.

I loved this book. I listened to it at a time in my life when I could really relate to the main character. She is a woman who is basically lost in life without knowing what her purpose is anymore and what her goals were. I learned alot about searching out what your passions are and what I'm willing to do to achieve my dreams.

I was slightly disappointed by McMillan's effort in this book. It seems that her heart wasn't really in it and neither was mine. It was difficult to connect with the characters and although I was interested to see the final outcome of the book, I generally had to make myself finish it. I would only recommend this one if you are a hard-core fan.

What a roller coaster ride! Get sucked into the world of Marilyn Grimes as she goes through a major life crisis. Great read for women and men who are near, are experiencing, or have experienced a mid-life crisis...also good for the people in their lives to understand what mom/dad/auntie might be going through. An excellent listen.

I read this and thought ummm she must put alot of her life experiences in her books. Then I saw her on Oprah and it was an episode which unravelled her life. Her Marriage, Her lover betraying her and then coming out. Then running her dry for her money. So i'm expecting a lot of more that in her next book.

There's a lot of soul in this book, but it's a little slow and sometimes confusing. if you can relate to this book then, you'll find yourself drifting from the page into the many or not so many trial of your own life. I like books that make you evaluate your own journey.

I loved this book! It was fun and something I think that many women can relate to. If you ever feel alone, then pick up this book. It reminds you that things could be worse, but that they will get better.

Good book to pop in the CD player in my car. I loved hearing the sassy-speak from the ethnic characters. I found the main character's thoughts matching my own in many respects. Good audio book. Enjoy!

I just began this book, and find it rather intriguing. Albeit Terry McMillan is not transgressing from her topic of woman unhappy with her life....and now must find her way... more later

Though I love Terry McMillan, I think she peaked with Stella and has been trying to recapture that voice ever since. However, I still recommend this one.

Enjoyed it because its vintage McMillan -- enjoy her style of storytelling. Nothing earthshattering, but a fun ride nonetheless.
