This book was read by my 11 year old daughter and this is her review :

Summer Pony is about a girl named Ginny who has always dreamed of having a horse of her own. Her parents finally agree to rent a horse for her for the summer. When she arrives at the SweetBriar Pony Farm, it is not what she imagined. There are many dirty, stinky, and underfed horses. But one horse catches Ginny's eye. The horse is similar to the others but different in so many ways. Ginny chooses her and shortly...more

There isn't anything I don't love about this book -- one of my all time favourites from when I was a kid. I love the story of a girl getting a less than impressive pony, rented just for the summer. I love the hard work and care given the pony to make her strong and healthy and beautiful. I love the story of friendship and courage, and the lessons learned throughout the summer. I love the beautiful cover and the illustrations. And, most of all, I love sharing this with my three daughters, in...more

Jean Slaughter Doty's Summer Pony and its sequel, Winter Pony, were two of my all time favorite childhood horse stories. Classic themes of wanting a pony and not having one, the social distance between the girl with the "good" pony (and the hired groom to care for it, and all the ribbons at the local show, etc.) and the girl with the motley, shaggy, rented pony--all written up into a pair of stories that pretty much can't be beat. So many happy hours were spent reading and rereading th...more

This young girl that she dreams of having a pony. Her parents go to this friend of them to rent a pony for the summer. So that she doesn't have to go to a camp to ride pony. They arrive their and there are only couple of choices, but they look that good. So she picks this one that has dots everywhere. The horse looks kind of tired and starving. They pay the rent and next morning they arrive at her house with it. She takes him for a ride and washes him...

I just adore this book. This book actually explains what it is like to ride, and care for a horse.

Jean Slaughter Doty has impressed me once again.

5 stars to my favorite author. :)

One of my favorite books as a horse-crazy kid! A new classic. A little far-fetched, but hey, who cares?

I read this book alot when I was younger and right now I'm reading it to my kids. They are really liking it. They both want a pony for the summer also.

Although this book has a good premise and decent story line, I didn't think the writing was all that well done. It doesn't go down as a classic, but it is a good choice for girls who like horses and want an easy to read book. My 6 year old enjoyed me reading it aloud to her and I think next year she'd be able to read it to herself. I liked the characters and the lessons.

I think I have most of this book memorized, I read it about 500 times beginning from the age of nine. I came across it a few years ago at my parents' house and I've read it a few times since - LOVE it! :) A great book for every girl who dreamed of having her own horse - I suspect my daughter will be reading it in a year or two.

monkey isn't the horse that ginny wants at all. she's scruffy and a paint (a paint!) but her parents said she could have a pony for the summer, and here is her pony. it's a lovely story about the ties that bond us to horses, and horses to us, and at the end, you dread the end of summer as much as ginny does.

This was my Mom's book when she was growing up. I kinda relate to the girl.
