For someone new to the varieties of religious culture this volume provides a handy and compact introduction. The book begins with the question, "What is religion?" and provides from there a general view of religion's cultural, communal, political, and even metaphysical significance. The book acknowledges even the anti-religious view of Marx or implicitly the new atheists but takes seriously religious belief as a pervasive and encompassing aspect of human life. The life and events are presented in a monthly progression, indicating the central events and celebrations that are part of Japanese life. It displays interesting images which help the reader visualize the events and life being described throughout the book. The historical background of the events is presented and descriptions of continuity and change regarding each event
