With only three words per double-page spread, this works well with the youngest of children. I used it with our LAPsit Story Time crowd -- 15 or so pairs of babies, toddlers, and adults.

We "acted out" actions the text suggested -- shivering (hug ourselves), leaves falling (wiggle fingers from overhead to lap), birds flying (flap arms), sleepy (yawn, rub eyes, stretch), look for a cave (shield eyes), snowing (wiggle fingers from overhead to lap again).

More snow on the next page! What a good excus

Sleepy Bear by Lydia Dabcovich is a great read-aloud about Bear getting ready for his long winter's nap (hibernation) and his springtime awakening.

Bear notices the cold weather, falling leaves, and birds headed south. Bear is sleepy, so he finds a cave and sleeps through the snows in his cozy cave. In the Spring, Bear doesn't want to wake up, even though birds and bugs come back. When Bear hears bees, however, he remembers honey, and gets up to follow the bees.

The text features bold words in cap

Recommends it for: parents reading with their young children
This is a very simple story that depicts a bear throughout the seasons. The narrative is short, with a big font and the illustrations are colorful with lots of different critters in the background scenes. It's a bit too babyish for our girls, but they still liked looking at the illustrations. We enjoyed reading this book together.
A very simple story of the seasons. As it begins to get cold a bear finds a den and hibernates for the winter. When the air begins to warm up the bear leaves the cave and follows the bees to find some honey.
Short simple word phrases and bold outlined illustrations show how Bear hibernates and looks forward to spring. Good book for babies and young toddlers.
A liked it and requested it often. Talks about hibernation and seasons. boring for adult to read.

Illustrates hibernation. Somewhat of an abrupt ending.
