Maybe best yet in unusual "skeleton doc" series!

This is the seventh novel in the successful and best-selling Tempe Brennon, board-certified forensic pathologist, series. Tempe is an exact replica of author Dr. Reichs in real life: same job, same education and background, and same dividing her time between two job settings - one in Montreal (she speaks fluent French) and one in North Carolina. Early in the book, Tempe testifies as an expert witness, but this was really just More...

Another opportunity for poor Detective Claudel to apologize. When will the guy knock off the arrogant attitude & learn to listen before jumping to conclusions? Or is Tempe just manufacturing cases? The discoveries in this plot are moving - Stockholm syndrome explained.
The issues with Ryan are a little melodramatic. Tempe has to learn to face things directly instead of this constant insecure speculation that leads nowhere, except to lost sleep and inattention at work. It's nice to read about a More...

Monday mourning is the seventh novel featuring Temperance Brennan, a Forensic Anthropologist who works for the Laboratoire de Sciences Judiciares et de Medecine Legale for the province of Quebec, Canada. If you haven’t read any of the previous novels featuring the character, please do not dismiss this book solely for that reason.
Temperance Brennan is a forty something Forensic Anthropologist who divides her time between Charlotte in North Carolina and Montreal in Canada. She works for the More...

If you like the Temperance Brennan crime series (not the same as the Bones TV show) this is just another great book. Sure there are some elements that are the same but I like the little surprises that get thrown in. Can't help it. To me these are the most realistic of the crime drama genre.

Temperance Brennan, forensic anthropologist for both North Carolina and Quebec, has come from Charlotte to Montreal during the bleak days of December to testify as an expert witness at a murder tri More...

I have read all of Kathy Reichs’s offerings since her first book, Deja Dead was published in 1997. I have to ask myself why.
I don’t particularly like Temperance Brennan, Kathy Reichs’ forensic heroine. I don’t like the settings of her novels, and even though I speak French, I don’t like it when her characters do.
Kathy Reichs has excellent story ideas and her plots are gripping. However, her characterization is weak. She seems to have decided that Tempe needs problems, and throws in a drinking p More...

I always enjoy the Temperance Brennan novels, but I tend to favor the ones set outside of Canada. Monday Mourning ended up being the exception. I loved the mystery and the back and forth during the investigation between Tempe and Claudel. Kathy Reichs has a way of "dumbing down" the science so readers can firmly grasp the concepts presented and that was highly effective in this novel. The only thing I didn't enjoy was Tempe's reactions to her issues with Ryan. She's strong and straight More...

Well!
Sped through this book, with its tales of Montreal and crime lords and bizarre malignant situations, spun together with romantic intrigues and friends in trouble. It's a quick, urgent read, hard to put down and fun to read. I've zipped through it once, now to review to study the structure.
Reichs is so good at creating suspense between chapters you keep thinking to yourself you'll stop after this chapter, only to find yourself unable to. My dog is seriously annoyed at me for my ign More...

Last weekend I read the excellent but almost-too-disturbing-to-finish Monday Mourning. Tempe is back in Montreal for this installment of the Bones-inspiring series. When three sets of bones are found buried in a pizza parlor basement, police are convinced they date to the nineteenth century when the building was built. Tempe has other thoughts on the matter, and she digs until a pattern of missing girls over a series of years emerges. The dark truth revealed in the last few pages caused me to sc More...

Reminds me of the Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell. The "Bones" TV series is based on these books, but the only thing the book has in common with the TV show is the main character's name & occupation. Still, a pretty good crime/mystery novel.

As the first Temperance Brennan book I've read (and most likely the last), I'd say this is better than okay, except for the see-it-coming-from-a-mile-away ending and several bouts of especially bad writing. I don't mean grammatical errors, but the kind of poor diction you can't describe or predict, only recognize. A couple of my favorite examples:

page 3: "I watched Claudel's perfectly fitted buttocks disappear through the small rectangular opening. Though tempted, I pegged no More...

If you like the Bones tv series, this is nothing like it. Ok, so the tv series is based off of this author's books, but Temperance Brennen is nothing in the book like she is on the show. However that being said, while I'm a huge fan of the show, I also like the books. Basically, you have the anthropologist figuring out who the body is and who dun it, and throw in a little of her personal life and drama. They are engaging and enjoyable. Warning - she has no issue with swear words. This one More...

another excellent book from Kathy Reichs intricatley woven plot to have you flying through chapters without you realising. Amazing how the relationship between Ryan and Tempe is still taking unexpected turns. Characters are all still very realistic and have good depth and issues....dont we all love characters with issues. You need to leave yourself plenty of time to read these books if you are like me you can't put a book down in the middle of a chapter. Reichs leaves nearly every chapter on a c More...

One of many Kathy Reichs books from a charity shop that I thought I'd try. First thing to note is it is nothing like the "Bones" TV Show. The characters are different, the setting is different - even the country is different!
On to the story ...
You can read the blurb, and that gives you the overview quite nicely. What it doesn't tell you I'd the dark nature of the story. It can be quite challenging in places but I'll say no more to keep the spoilers to a minimum. Suffice it to More...

Story: Forensic anthropologist, Temperance Brennan investigates the remains of three girls found in the basement of a pizza parlor. Her examinations and findings results in locating a serial SM killer who abducts and holds young women as slaves.

The story shows how this discovery is made, including fine information about the field of forensics, and some OK police procedure.

Tempe's personal life is strewn throughout, including her emotional extremes about her current lover- More...

Set in Montreal, Brennan is called on to investigate the dicovery of three sets of bones found in the basement of a pizza-by-the-slice restaurant. Meanwhile, her heartthrob, Detective Andrew Ryan is seen with a beautiful young lady on his arm, and Brennan has to decide what to do about THAT. The investigating detective, Luc Claudel is convinced the bones are old, and that no significant investigative resources need be spent on them. Brennan thinks otherwise. Brennan, of course, is right. Once again Ms. Reichs delivers a well thought out novel. I will never understand how Dr. Brennan gets herself into so many precarious situations! The scariest part of reading these novels is that I am finding more of myself in Dr. Brennan. Which could lead to problems should I follow in her path. ;) As Brennan works hard to identify 3 bodies found int he basement of a pizza parlour in Quebec, she is thrown into a whole new sick and twisted world that oddly enough leads to repaired relationships. Kathy Reichs has done an amazing job as usual. While reading this book I fell in love with Temperance Brennan even more. Of course Tempe gets into situations that make you want to shake your head, but that's the reason we all love to read these books in the first place. I find it amazing how connected she gets to each of her cases. You would think that over time one would become immune to the horror or at least hardened to it, but not Tempe.

This book is rich in forensic details and the plot is fast moving and captivating a real nail bitter. Although some scenes may seem implausible and far fetched I enjoyed reading it and I couldn't put it down.

I do have to comment Ms Reichs use of the local language is not a true depiction of a French Montrealer there are mistakes in spelling and expressions. I also find like many other readers living in Montreal, she needs assistance describing the city and the language. But fiction i More...

Well, the science was good. As usual it was thoroughly researched and I learned something new, about Carbon dating. But, I can't help feeling the storyline just gets formulaic. Got news about boyfriend seeing other woman, instead of asking she just keep quiet. Then towards the end, of course she had to go to the house without telling anyone. I mean, come on, this works on book 1 or 2 but by book 7 you think she'd know better than plunge headfirst into potentially dangerous sitch don't you?

This was the first "Bones" book that I have read. I really enjoy the TV show and was sad to discover that the TV show is nothing at all like the books. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! Only her name is the same. That is it. In the books she is in her mid 40's and lives between Montreal Canada, and Charlotte NC. She doesn't work for the FBI. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!

While the forensic side of the book was interesting, it wasn't enough to make a full-length novel, so what to do? Why don't we add a half-dozen lame subplots? Add in a couple of utterly predicatable plot twists and pages of turgid exposition just so the reader completely understands that the author is a forensics expert and speaks French fluently. Despite several bouts of utterly wretched prose, the book does move quickly, so it definitely falls into the broad genre of "Need to Kill Time More...

This series is a mix of some of my favorite things -medical thrillers and horror books and suspenseful reads with a really cool dash of anthropology thrown in. It also has some really great characters that keep me coming back for more, Temp Brennan is warm and intelligent and has a real life charisma while having the worst luck when it comes to safety and work. She tends to get into trouble quite often, mostly from discovering who the bad guy is when it comes to unearthing remains that look like More...

This is the 7th book in the Temperance Brennan series. This book is pretty much the same as the first 6. Murders need to be solved and Dr. Brennan finds herself in the middle of something bigger than she thought. The thing about murder is there are so many different ways a person can die and so many different reasons why a person would kill another person. The combinations are virtually endless, which is really not a reassuring thing when you think about it. Most of these stories come from More...

I really have an issue wit this series when the action takes place in Canada. The author feels a need to name every building and street in Quebec which is very distracting since I don't speak French and find myself trying to figure out whether she's talking about a street (irrelevant) or a building (also irrelevant). Even knowing that whatever she's referring to is not important, I can't help but pause and try to decipher its meaning. It's interesting that when Tempe is in the lower 48 (I lik More...

A good book! I didn't have any good guesses on who the perp was until close to the ending. I did figure it out before Tempe and Ryan did, but not till the end which is okay.

Tempe is brought in to help identify three skeletons found buried in the basement of a pizza-by-the-slice joint. Although the police are willing to write them off as "old" bones from the last century, Tempe's not. With the assistance of her best friend, Ann, visiting from North Carolina and her heart More...
