Anyone who has ever suffered at the hands of an older brother or sister, or even worse, been sandwiched in between older and younger siblings, will thoroughly enjoy this cartoon novel delivered in the guise of the journal of the beleaguered, under-appreciated and very funny Gregory. This book makes an especially excellent reading suggestion for reluctant boy readers. The third in the series is forthcoming!

Ok, so I read this book to see why my students seem to love it so.

Now, I'm all for silly humor. I can understand that, but I don't get the attraction for this book. I hated it. I finished it in a little over a day, but never did I stop wishing for it to end. I think the characters were horrible; the people in the book did mean things to each other; every person in the book was inconsiderate to each other; etc. I really could go on! Rodrick Rules was just as funny and descriptive as the other. In this book, Greg has disturbing conflicts with his brother that enrages Greg. As Greg states his *moments* with Rodrick, he discovers Rodrick has been rather mean too him. I can't wait to read the third book!

When last we saw our hero Greg Heffley he had survived everything from cursed cheese to an unfortunate stage debut. Not that much has changed in his life, of course. He’s still a perpetual victim of his older brother Rodrick’s crazy schemes and his younger brother Manny’s three-year-old excesses. Greg might have to do what Rodrick says for a while too since his older brother knows something terrible, HORRIBLE even, that happened to Greg over the summer and he's threatening to tell the world. And though Greg might try to participate in everything from role-playing to writing his comic strip to forget it, eventually that sword of Damocles is going to fall. It’s just a matter of time.

Kinney is almost eerily good at writing material that is as funny to kids as it is to adults. I haven’t yet discussed this book with someone who doesn’t know how the game Dungeons and Dragons works, so I wonder if a D&D newbie would find the game in which Greg’s mom joins (calling her character “Mom”) as funny as I did. For a sequel, there’s a lot of new stuff in this book as well. We finally get a chance to see Loded Diper (Rodrick’s band) play. We see Manny enter preschool on Halloween Day with disastrous results. And then there’s the Mom Bucks program instituted by Greg’s mother. That one sounded a little too real to have been made up, though.

You could probably use these books in class to discuss the concept of the “unreliable narrator” because at a certain point, Greg’s life is what every pre-teen to teen boy feels like his own life is. Everybody gets away with stuff except for you. Parents are too nerdy or out-of-it to be of any use, friends are unreliable, and the world is a scary place where your unique skills are not recognized. You get the distinct feeling that Greg might be exaggerating some of the events in his life, but that's not a bad thing. That said, it’s hard not to feel vindicated when Rodrick finally has something bad happen to him at the end of the book. Who knew that YouTube can be the ultimate high school equalizer! It brings adolescent embarrassment to a whole new level.

There are a lot of familiar callbacks, of course. Fights with best friend Rowley, for example. And I was very sad to find that one of my favorite characters, Fregley, didn’t make an appearance in this sequel. Still, it all basically comes down to this: If you like the first “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” then you will like the second. Maybe it doesn’t carry the surprise of the first book, but what sequel does? Thoroughly enjoyable and unrepentantly hilarious.(less)

It's funny
I read it so slow, so the laugh doesn't end of my day:)

I was trying to articulate in my mind what it is I enjoy about these books. Is it because my son loves them? Is it the stick figure drawings? Is it the artful ability to make a "diary" not entirely un-cool for boys?
All these things are true and yet non warranted a "4 star" response in my mind then I realized two things
#1. I really, really love these book's unapologetic look at a kids world. #1. I really, really love these book's unapologetic look at a kids world. Greg(the main character) does lots of stupid and even unwittingly mean things and happily the author avoids the pitfall of having greg "learn a lesson" at the end of each. Greg and his brother fight often, Greg's laziness causes hardships at school, Greg is un-gracious (as an understatement) to his best friend and he just keeps being that way. Yet his antics are common/honest and generally harmless enough that he is more recognizable than disdainable.

#2. As a soon to be 39 year old woman I am coming to grips with the fact that in many ways I am an adolescent boy at heart. I laugh too much, have a hard time controlling impulses to blurt things out and almost always see the crudity in language when crudity was not intended. I am what I am. The product of 3 brothers has had a lasting effect. The other day I had a typical text exchange with one of my brothers that involved him asking what to wear to a retirement dinner, me suggesting he "dress like a depressed clown hoping for one last gig" him retorting, "great! can I barrow some of your clothes then?" and me admonishing him, "only when you return the lingerie you already borrowed" This conversation is not so remarkable in and of itself except that when the "conversation" was over (and my delighted giggles stopped) it occurred to me that my brother and I have had exactly TWO....ever...in the time that text messaging has arrived...serious exchanges via this mode of communication. Later at the afore mentioned retirement party my sister, her boyfriend, my brother and I spent a good portion of the evening twisting words of speakers into perverted or ridiculous statements and nearly had to walk out when we couldn't hold it together during a particularly long (and ripe for puns) speech.
When I got home, I saw the book on my table and thought. Ah-ha! No wonder I love these books so much! They speak to my inner adolescent boy self.(less)

Diary of a Wimpy kid: Rodrick Rules is the sequel to Diary of a Wimpy Kid and the second in the series. As I shared in my review of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, that this is one of my son's favorite book series. My son AJ who is 10, was so happy that I read the first book and when I finished it, he lined up book 2 and 3 in the series on my nightstand. What mother could say no to that?!

This is the second book from the latest popular "teen" series called "Diary of a Wimpy Kid". In the book a dairy of a wimpy kid Rodrick rules. Is a good book one thing I like about it is that it is like a real diary and he express all of his felling and he write what he felling.
