In 1930s Britain, 11-year-old Julia goes to live at her father's house for one school term. Her parents divorced when she was very young, and she has spent most of her life in the country with her mother, stepfather, and siblings. She has always been home-schooled, so before she begins boarding school next year, her father thinks she should try day-school for five months.

When Julia arrives at her father's house, she finds her stepmother, Trudl, not expecting her and her father away for work. Jul
