Lifelong baseball fanatic and former college ball player Abe Streep had long since grown disillusioned with the slick spectacle of modern major-league baseball when he discovered the Santa Fe Fuego, a scrappy upstart team struggling through its first season in an independent professional league that few baseball fans had even heard of. The Fuego players were paid barely ...more

This was a very nice, short read about the game of baseball in its simplest and purest level - the Independent Leagues.

The story of the Fuego is told in a sentimental tone that will appeal to the fan who longs for the pre-steroid, pre-millionaire days of the game.

The odds are you have never heard of any of the players who play for the Fuego. A few times during the story I had to stop to ask myself, "Wait, is he talking about the coach, the owner, the old pitcher, or the young catcher?" but in t

"In the great game of life, there is baseball, and there is everything else."

Pretty much sums up the atmosphere this kindle single evokes.

Journalist Abe Streep followed what was arguably the worst professional baseball team in 2012 - the Santa Fe Fuego of the Pecos Independent League.

If you have ever attended a minor league game, or even watched Bull Durham once or twice you will really enjoy this. It reminds you why baseball remains so embedded in American culture. It's the most democratic of

Interesting

This is not a book. It's a long magazine article. That is a little false advertising on Amazon's part. What it is though is an enjoyable look behind the scenes at an independent minor league team. I read the whole thing in one night. It's worth the time to read as long as you understand what it is.

I enjoy baseball stories. I played baseball for 9 years myself though my dream of pro ball had ended early on for me. It is amazing to read how some men will do anything just to keep playing the game. This short work reveals that dream and how, even in the lowest minor league, there are still guys doing whatever to just keep playing baseball.

VERY SHORT. I didn't get interested enough in any of the baseball players to be able to keep them straight. I think this would have been a interesting book if it was told in the first person by one of the players as an actual story, instead of by a guy in the stands who does not see, feel, or hear a lot of what is going on.

Too short, but it has me ready for baseball. Really could have been a wonderful book if it kept going. Feels like I just read a really good magazine article.
