My intent and vision for the Neighborwood series is to connect children and nature to teach earth literacy to them. I have acquired my MA in earth literacy, and my thesis was teaching earth literacy to kids. My project was this book (Neighborwood: Earth Literacy for Kids), and I have many ideas for the series. Here is my abstract from my thesis: Abstract The themes ...more

This book was recently entered in The Wishing Shelf Awards. This is what our young readers thought:

CONTENT 7/10
The children enjoyed the book very much. They felt it was fun to read and held an important message for them. They liked how the animals learned with them and many of the children enjoyed the part where the country mouse sent a letter to the city mouse describing his life.
A few of the readers thought the illustrations were a little too simple. Saying that, most of them gave the drawings

“Neighborwood: Earth Literacy for Kids”by April Manning. This book was really cute and had some great information attached to it. I always love when a book has a purpose aside from entertainment. Neighborwood does that beautifully. The book teaches children about the environment via The Land Ambassador dubbed Lamb. She takes you off to see habitats with forests, trees, animals and more. I especially loved that she used animals as teaching guides . kept my 3 year olds attention and I loved that ...more

Wonderfully created children's book about Earth literacy. Very informative but entertaining story teaching children about the different types of habitats that are found on Earth and ways to protect it. Loved all the vocabulary words that were found throughout the book and the Pen Pal activity was a very nice addition.

Neighborwood was a beautifully written, informative book about different habitats in our environment. A variety of different words were defined, and these important words were highlighted by underlining them. This was a book that would work very well in a classroom as part of a science lesson. There is also information on how to connect with penpals at the back of the book if children wish to do so as the animals in the book are doing in their class.

I really liked the way the author explained th

Neighborwood is part of the Earth Literacy for Kids program. It is a great read that children will enjoy.

We begin by meeting Lamb and walking with her through her Neighbor”wood”. She introduces us to her special habitat and the creatures that live there. She explains that there are many other different kinds of habitats where people and animals live.

The characters are encouraged to connect with Pen Pals around the world and share their stories. I think this is a really important message the aut

Neighborwood is a fun and educational series for kids! This is a great way to teach kids about the world around them and how everything works together. I think kids will love the pen pals aspect and will want to learn more about others. This series is a must for parents who want to have informed kids!Neighborwood: Earth Literacy for Kids

I love to learn and have earned my BS in biology with a minor in chemistry and recently acquired my MA in Earth Literacy. The Earth Literacy program is interdisciplinary learning which fosters the capacity to understand the natural world in order to ensure sustainability of the planet as a habitat for life.
