Fans of the novels (which are better) won't find much of anything new in this prequel to the Anita Blake series. Anita comes across as pretty green compared to book one but I suppose this is supposed to be her before she became really tough so she seems weaker on the page when it comes to willpower. Additionally, she gets rescued a great deal more rather than getting out of the problem through her own abilities. While Hamilton is listed as one of the authors I strongly suspect she made a cursory More...

My first one-star rating of the year, sigh. Though I was very tempted to give Flirt the same treatment, it got off with 2 stars.
The is the first graphic novel I've ever read and boy was it bad. This is supposed to be a prequel to Guilty Pleasures. It includes Anita and JC's first meeting which DOES NOT match the story given in the series. JC says that he fell in love with Anita at first sound, saw her gun and knew she could defend herself and wouldn't wait around to be rescued - only the meeting More...

The first Death is an interesting enough story, put on paper. It’s supposed to be the prequel before the book series starts. Anita describes bits and pieces of what happened to her in Guilty pleasures and the following books, to explain how her arm got so mangled and how she came to posses all her scars.
So far I still prefer the novels, but I'm willing to give the Graphic novels another try. I think Laurell K. Hamilton just does such a good job explaining what's going on in her stories and allo More...

This is really back to basics, old vintage Anita, set in time just before the first of the novels, Guilty Pleasures.
This is the story of how Anita came to work with the police, her first meeting with Jean-Claude and not to forget the reason she ended with an ally as Mr. Death himself. It is a fast tale Laurell K. Hamilton along with her husband Jonathon Green is serving us. The pace is steady, writing quite basic and the illustrations is really what drives the storyline forward.

I've heard a lot about Laurell Hamilton and the Anita Blake series and these have been generally quite mixed, some people like it some don't but when I saw this book in the library and read it was the prequel to the series I thought I'd give it a go...and now I wish I hadn't. The story seemed quite flimsy and inconsistent, I thought Blake was some kind of vampire hunter not a wimpy young girl who can't cope with blood, being attacked or banter in any way shape or form. Not what I expect from a v More...

I actually just skimmed this when it came into the library and it was terrible. Of course I thought the first two books were horrible - never ventured past the second book-so that might have some bearing on my feelings about this, but not much. (I only picked it up because I was curious to see how they had adapted this series to graphic novel format.)
The dialogue is melodramatic taken to the ridiculous extreme. It reads like a 70s romance novel. It's just terrible. The artwork was okay although More...

I think It's a really nice read for the Anita Blake's series fan. I really liked to discover more events that happen before Guilty Pleasure. We learn some facts we find in some books or we assist to some interesting events like the first meeting between Anita and JC. It's a fast read as the book is shared thiw the comics and the presentation of each characters.

3 ½ to 4 stars. I enjoyed the drawings very much, and happy that Marvel did such a good job on the details and colors.
What I didn’t like? That some of the men, most importantly Jean-Claude is very drawn very feminine. JC is not how I pictured him at all when I read Ms. Hamilton’s books. So, in that sense this could be a very disappointing graphic-novel for some people who have a firm picture in their head of JC.

Genre: Graphic Novel and Vampire Fantasy
This book is the prelude story to Hamilton's best selling series, Anita Blake the Vampire Hunter. Anita Blake is a new necromancer, able to raise the dead into zombies, and a legal vampire executioner. There is a vampire killing children and Anita is called in by the police to help hunt and kill this vampire. This book I would wait for an older teen because there are graphic scenes of bodies, violence, and blood.

If you're going to invest in the comic books, which exceed this book in retail cost, don't bother getting this unless you simply want it for the companion info this book comes with, which I think is well done and helps a person pick up on everything if they're not already a fan of the series and author.
Not thinking anything of it initially, and in the long haul spending less between the comic book purchases on Ebay as well as this book which I also got on Ebay for $6, I'm sort of glad to have a More...

My first ever graphic novel I've read. Having read all of Laurell K Hamilton's books I really wanted to give this a go as my first GN, mainly as I knew some of the background already and would have an idea of what was to come. I really enjoyed this. Easy read, action packed, fantastically drawn; I was impressed and won't turn my nose up again when someone suggests I try something new. I'll be doing the other Anita GN's shortly.

A really quick and fun read. I don't think it would be a good starting point in the series. I think that it really only would be enjoyable by people who have read at least one or two of the novels and already have some feelings about the characters.
I was a little surprised with how Zerbrowski looked. I always pictured him as a little fatter. I don't know why. I guess he just seemed like a fat detective.

Anita blake doing what she does best raising zombies and slaying vampires and along the way we see her as she encounters Edward the only human being who scares her more than the Vampires, Zombies and everything else that goes bump in the night. Am really enjoying the graphic comics they give me hope on Laurell K's work since i pretty much ignore the rest of her new stuff.

Decent prequal to the Anita Blake series. The plot was good, and it takes care of some of the plot points mentioned in the books, like how she got her cross-shaped scar, how she made an enemy of Valentine and how she first met Jean Claude. But it would have done better as a novella than as a graphic novel. There's lots of action, which is a plus, but it all felt a tad rushed; everything happened so fast that it felt like it was over before it even began. I was especially hoping for a little more More...

This was fun! Its a back story from the first Anita Blake book Guilty Pleasures. It shows how Anita and Jean-Claude met and how she got her cross scar. The best part is the character bios at the end, that alone was worth the read. But the way how they drew every one's hair made me crazy! Everyone had a big piece of hair flopping right between their eyes, it drove me nuts!

I was really amused by this story. Set prior to the book series and pre-"let's all have magical sex", it was fun to return to the more repressed but tough as nails Anita. There is still gratuitous nakedness and plenty of sexual jokes, but they're more entertaining in this medium. Visually Edward isn't quite as I pictured him, but he grew on me.

it was interesting learning about the hunt with Valentine when it happened. i always wondered what had happened on that night from when he first came into the Anita Blake novels. i thought it would be about when Anita first meets Edward with the title being First Death and Death being Edwards name...alas that wasn't the case. it was good but not great.

While I don't like some of the drawing likenesses, I did like the story. In so many of the books we have heard about the events in this book, but it was nice to see them laid out, the first meeting of Anita and Jean Claude, Edward and Anita working together for the first time, and Dolph asking Anita to go to the vamps for info.

This takes place before Guilty Pleasures. I was expecting some extra insight or details on Anita or any of the other characters but it is REALLY short. In a nut shell this short story is about the case where Anita first meets Valentine. I was disappointed. To top it off, nearly half of the book is filled with character bios and details for all the people that appear in Guilty Pleasures. I’m not sure it’s really worth the effort.

Useful as it includes a collection of quotes from various characters in the book as well as a sort of, kind of prequel to the first Anita Blake (it includes Jean-Claude! so how can it truly be a prequel?), Guilty Pleasures. Buy it only if you are a die-hard fan with an obsessive need to have the complete collection.

I wanted to read this because there's a story in here that wasn't available in the original series. It was all right, but I prefer the novels to the graphic novels.
Warnings: language and gore. This story takes place before Guilty Pleasures, so there isn't any sex -- unlike later volumes.

I definitely enjoyed seeing the back story of Anita. Especially this particular story since it really is a defining point in Anita's life and something that she's mentioned numerous times. I noticed the art was a little different, characters looked not quite the same as in the other graphics, but nonetheless it was great!

I'm a pretty big fan of the vamps, and I like graphic novels, so I thought I would try my first read of Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake series with this one. I was not impressed...I thought the art was just ok and the writing fairly poor. There wasn't much going on in the story and I didn't finish it feeling like I learned much about the series or the characters at all really. Also, it took me several sittings to get through this which really shouldn't happen with a short graphic novel- but I j More...

I thought this was a fun read. Nothing intelligent, but entertaining. And I really enjoyed the drawing of Anita with the X-men zombies! lol

I love the artwork in this book and I think it's a great prequel. It explains a lot of things I was curious about in the first book.

This comic is awesome. It finally introduces all the background info that was only alluded to in the first few books of that series.

I loved seeing Anita meeting Jean Claude for the first time. He's just simply breathtaking! I loved the story with Edward too.
