"I never lied; I always shared my concern and commitment with anyone who would listen. I always respected the people working for the military or government agencies. I believe it was refreshing for the people I was contacting to deal with someone who was neither patronizing nor adversarial. Rather, I tried to approach the project as research. Most people were disarmed by my interest in photographing architecture rather than people. They felt this was more benign" (pg. #143).
