This is one of the Oz books--I don't know where it falls in the series and I've been told that after the first three, it doesn't matter. It's essentially a couple of travelogues. One is the journey of the general of the Nome King, who ventures to odd lands to recruit troops to conquer and destroy the Land of Oz. The other trip is that taken by Dorothy and assorted companions, who, oblivious to the growing threat, are touring some unvisited corners in Oz's vast realm. As plots go, this one's pret...more

A very odd Oz book as the heroes spend a lot of time off screen, as the story follows the efforts of the kingdom-less Gnome King to gather an army made up of some downright creepy creatures, so he can try again to invade Oz.
The Dorothy and company spend most of the book oblivious to this, as she's brought her Uncle and Aunt finally to Oz.
So, the two stories of fanciful tour of Oz and meetings between throughly devious monsters.
They come together in the end with a clever resolution.

This is one of the best antiques that I own. I was gonna wait to enter the antiques until after I'd entered everything else b/c I know I will have to enter most of them into the database manually, but I just entered a modern copy of The Wizard of Oz that Vicki gave me and it made me think of this one. It is a lovely, lovely book that sold for $1.25 in 1910 (which seems like a lot for back then, doesn't it?). The John R. Neill illustrations are delightful. I bet whatever child this belonged to ba...more

The Emerald City of Oz suffers from the same issue as The Road to Oz... too many characters, too little plot. I did prefer this one to RtO though as it seemed better spaced, and there actually was some plot with the Gnome invasion. I also liked Aunt Em and Uncle Henry's reaction to Oz, even if they did seem terribly naive at times.
I actually saw a cartoon version of this as a kid, but as it was before I spoke English and without subtitles, I didn't get all that much out ...more

Join Dorothy and the Wizard as they take Aunt Em and Uncle Henry on a fabulous tour of Oz. During their journey, they encounter such amazing and amusing people as King Kleaver with his Spoon Brigade and Miss Cuttenclip of the land of paper dolls. But while Dorothy and her friends play, the wicked Nome King has joined forces with the terrible Whimsies, the fearsome Growleywogs, and the evil Phanfasms in a plot to capture the Emerald City. Will Dorothy's friends discover the danger before it's too...more

Technically the "final" book in the Oz series, and one that wraps up the history of the country and its zany inhabitants quite nicely. After this it's one wacky adventure after another in each book. All have pretty similar storylines with different characters taking on leading roles. They're fun, but that's about it. EXCEPT for the next book in the series (The Patchwork Girl of Oz), which is hands-down my favorite. That quilted doll is IL-AIR-E-OUS!

i read this almost 12 years ago and apparently some reviewer says Auntie Em an ol' Henry visits Oz itself. starting to remember something along them lines. i do reckon i 'member the ball-breaker Nome King's minions digging a tunnle from Nome Mountain to the E.C. only to be stopped by The Royal Army of Oz a.k.a. Tik-Tok or some shit like that anyway. there may have been more Tik-Toks but i don't recollect.

The last book in the oz series I've read (I'm having trouble finding the rest). First off, the cover is amazing. If I weren't reading the oz series already, I'd definately have picked this one up because of the cover. And what's underneath the cover is just amazing. Baum gave such a conclusive ending in this book. I really wonder how we get abck to oz for the other eight.

Wow! Baum totally woke himself up out of the daze he'd been in for a couple of books and comes up with an awesome set of villains, some real sense of _stakes_ (not since "Ozma" had he really gone for that), this great country mouse/city mouse stuff with Aunt Em and Uncle Henry IN OZ, and even a cool quasi-ending to the series...though of course we know that wouldn't last.

A delightful story about Dorothy exploring Oz with Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. Meanwhile, the King of the Nomes plots to destroy Oz to avenge his humiliating defeat at the hands of Dorothy and Ozma. I thoroughly enjoy Baum's unusual sense of humor. A fun read for kids of all ages.

I am saying "read" because we were almost done with it, but it was essentially abandoned. It just wasn't holding our attention as the other Oz books did.

I collected these right before my son was born (2003) and recently read them all -- so much fun!
