Amy, as an infant, was left on the steps of St. Anne's Home for girls with a basket containing a sailor doll and loaf of bread. Later, she changes into a doll and the doll changes into a sea captain, and they sail the pirate-ridden high seas with a crew of Mother Goose animals, in search of gold treasure.

Oh, oh, oh, what a lovely, sad, wonderful little book. Except it is not really little at all. It's thick, a glorious 437 pages, full of adventure, fantasy, mystery, and Mother Goose.
C.S. Lewis once said, "A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest."
Amy's Eyes proves this quote to be true. A children's book, yes, but one suitable and entertaining enough for any age.

My Dad gave this book to me a long, long time ago and even today I can vividly recall the wonder and excitement of reading this touching story. So well written, so rich and imagintive. One of my all time favorites.

This is my absolute all time favorite book ever. And that's saying something, because I really really like a lot of books. But this is one of the few that I have read over and over and is falling apart.

I read this book when I was a child. It was one of the first books I ever read by myself and I remember it made me cry. It was then I realized that books could take you on incredible journeys and I have been an avid reader ever since. I'm getting ready to read it again and I'm pretty excited to see if I still like it as an adult.

This is the kind of book what sticks with you, especially if read at a young age. Full of magic and mischief, it is a beautiful story of what love can accomplish. You'll never look at a beloved doll the same way again. (And hearing 'Greensleeves' will make you smile for a long time to come.)

A weird, awesome, sprawling, children's epic about an intelligent, sentient doll who's on a quest to retrieve her stolen eyes that have been pitched to the bottom of the sea - and the sailor who loves her. I think. I don't really remember, but it definitely blew my mind when I was 9 or 10.

I stumbled upon this book as a young teen, while shopping with my mom at a thrift store. Somehow it caught my eye and I bought it. I ended up loving it, though I'm not certain why. I often remember parts of it with great fondness. It's one I'll pass down to my daughter someday.

I will read any book about dolls! Amy has a sailor doll that comes to life and then Amy becomes a doll herself. They sail the world with Mother Goose animal dolls come to life to find a golden treasure.

I didn't like this book as much as I thought I might have. Some parts were boring and slow, especially some nautical parts. It got better towards the end. Maybe I would have liked this better if I read this when I was younger.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. You'll be laughing on minute and crying the next. I've read it at least once a year since my sixth grade English teacher read it to the class. So much fun.

The first book I ever read that was over 400 pages long!!! And I LOVED it!!! I entered it into the search simply for nostalgia and couldn't believe I still remembered the cover!
Megan Morris
The first "big" book I remember reading in elementary school! I remember wishing my imagination was as wonderful as Amy's. One of first memories of "loving a book"!

I loved this book as a child and I just reread it because we're reading it to my children. It's still just as engaging as it was for me when I was 8.

Grand adventure, complete with stuffed animals come alive, pirates, gold treasure, an orphanage, an albatross, Bible quotations, "Greensleeves," poop decks, and more. One of NS's Baker Dem School favorites.

This cover is very familiar so I am surprise I never read it - maybe because it came out while I was submerged in MBA studies.

Amy's Eyes is a book I remember reading over and over when I was younger. It's the story of a girl left at the door of an orphanage with only a sailor doll for company, and as she confides her life to that doll the doll comes to life..with a few consequences for Amy. It's magical storytelling without most of the traditional fantasy elements. There's also a bit of adventure, some sailing, and quite a lot of talking to dolls.

One of my teachers in elementary school read this to us as a class. I remember being riveted. I had been wanting to re-read it for a couple years, so when I happened to see it at the library, I snatched it up. And I think I enjoyed it almost as much this time around. Wyatt even enjoyed the parts that I read aloud to him, and he is a hyperactive 3 year old.
Sarah Swenson
My favorite book of all time!!! Unfortunately for those who haven't read it, it's out of print and very hard to find.
Henning
Of all books I read as young, this one stands out in my memory! I fondly remember spending several weeks of a summer, sprawled on a blanket in the shade under a tree in the yard reading this wonderful and mystical tale of a orphan girl who has a doll which becomes captain of a ship.
Jess
I haven't re-read this book as an adult yet. I suppose that is primarily because I remember it as such an amazing experience as a child. Though not listed among the usual children's classics, this book absolutely captivated me, and I recommend it to everyone with young daughters.
