Usually I really like Stephen King's works, however, the Gingerbread Girl was short, predictable and a bit flawed in the thinking of the focal character. The book was rather short. It followed the typical formula of a hostage-taking nut-case killer. This type of story can be thrilling when well constructed and has a few plot twists; GingerB G does not have any surprise plot twists. The lead character makes some pretty stupid decisions. For example, you are tied-up by the killer who leaves the ho...more

My very first audiobook. It was enjoyable other than the recognition of many phrases and images that King uses over and over - "the world leapt back to brightness" or some such when the main character regains consciousness; "she had no way of knowing X but somehow she did," etc. Also certain themes were repeate: recovery after loss, physical activity as a means to self-healing, the main character isolating herself from her normal life.

The two things which I found ...more

A short story / novella from King. It doesn't start out in the style I'm used to from King, but it does end that way. Having just finished it, I'm left wondering what the moral of the story was (if there was one, apparently I missed it). I suppose King was implying some sort of victory for the protagonist, but for me it just seemed about loss, loss, and more loss.

I never did get the connection to the title either. If you figure that out, please let me know...

I don't listen to a lot of audio books any more (they got me through my graduate children's literature classes, though). I listen on occasion when I don't have time to read a "big boy book" that I really want to read (because I'm reviewing too many children's books) or when a reader I love reads a book (I have listened to books I would never read just because George Guidell read them--yummy!)

I AM a Stephen King fan. I've read most of what he has written & falling in love wi...more

I decided to listen to this short story, I guess in hopes that he had changed. Of course his books are always good. I just wish he would write without using the language he does. Always has great plots and suspense, but to me it's not worth listening to/or reading the language.

Listened to on my i-pod while running kids to and from school. Entertaining and kept me engaged. It's been so long since I have read a Stephen King, it was fun getting back to his creepy story telling.

Listened while on a road trip. Mare Whinningham does a good read, and the book pulls you in immediately like typical King. Unfortunately, more like King has become these days, it was an unsatisfying end.

Not my favorite... couldn't even finish it. King is true to his demented self, though. He doesn't disappoint ~ that's my problem!!! :)

Good King book - kind of reminds me of Duma Key due to the setting of the story. Quite short, but enjoyable none the less.

I listened to this after having a hard time with the talking book of THE WORLD WITHOUT US. Quick and easy.

Nice little piece of meat. Just a plain ole' pop fiction piece with great tension. I absolutely loved the use of the ice cubes and later how he brings together the "learning how to fall.." Nice short read.

Good quick read, moved along well, nice suspense, though there were a few predictable "King" moments (I long for the day when one of his main characters does NOT lose control of his/her bladder in fear).

This was an awesome story: taut, suspenseful and just long enough. I don't think S.K. has any plans to release the book in print, so it's a good thing Mare Winningham did such a great job on the audio. I actually sat in my car listening to it for a good 20 minutes after I got home because I had to find out what happened. Big King fan that I am, I've never listened to one of his talking books, but if they're all this good, I might have to investigate others.

I thought it was pretty decent.
Sad of course, and it did make my adrenaline rush.. a little. I can't imagine what it would be like to be put in a situation like that.

It's a quick read, if you were ever looking for something to just kind of pass the time this would be a good one.

This was short, but very suspenseful. I listened to it in my car and had to turn it off a couple times, because it was getting me so riled up.
As usual in these types of stories, thw woman does some stupid things, but she redeems herself at the end.
Enjoyable.

Just a quick (two hours or so) audio program. Not available in print. Unlike other King works, this is not horror or supernatural in any way. Just a scary story, especially if you're a girl. Nothing spettacoloso, but well told as always.

I enjoyed the story and it kept me entertained on the long drive from my house to my parents and back. I did have some problems at first listening to Mare Winningham use the type of language that King uses.

A Stephen King book that is only available in audio. It is okay -- not too scary, not too long, not too interesting. An audio break from public radio politics and crummy radio stations.

Never thought I'd give one star to a Stephen King book, but this just wasn't very good. It was short, had no character development, and was totally predictable.
