This is a fairly simple story by Simone de Beauvoir, published in 1966, some 20 years after her watershed essay Le Deuxieme Sexe (translated as either The Second Sex or The Other Sex). The theme has existentialist overtones, but it is presented in a gentler manner than the whomping, heavy existentialism of Beauvoir’s longtime companion Jean-Paul Sartre and their contemporary Albert Camus. The novel involves three generations of a family in turmoil. Fifty-year-old Dominque has left her husband of ...more

It's the success of an author to be timeless.Simone de Beauvoir is a woman that has a great understanding of her times problems.Especially for women ,she is a real courage.

In this book we see a woman who is not happy but pretends to be.She has everthing;a good job,a good husband and amazing daughters but she needs smth more which she has lost while trying to be stable.

Essentially de Beauvoir anticipating Mad Men, with ad artist protagonist Laurence seeking fulfillment in domesticity and extramarital love, upper middle class comfort and academic asceticism, yet finding none of them scratch the fundamental itch that is the alienated human condition. True, this is the story told without benefit of hindsight, but even so one detects a certain scepticism towards the techno-utopians blithely sure that by 1990 atomic power and artificial protein will ensure the end ...more

the book asks some really good questions about love, life and everything
it is also a little bit funny how they talk about the 90s as the distant future when there will be no more pain, hunger and suffering in the world

i quickly found myself smiling at de beauvoir's style of writing - the jumping between what's going on in the main character's head and the narrative of the story was pretty nice

although the book somehow seems "unfinished" to me now, i have to say i really enjoyed it

Les Belles Images is one of those books that delivers different insights and experiences every time it's re-read. Set in mid-60s Paris, it's a moving and thoughtful exploration of living with Modernity.

Laurence, the main character, would appear to have it all - a handsome successful husband, a career in advertising, two daughters, a brand new flat in a fashionable district, weekends in the country, a discreet love affair on the side. But she can't shake the feeling that none of it is r

This book was a huge surprise for me. I enjoyed it very much, if "enjoy" is the word... at first the narration really confused me, like how she switches between first and third person narration all the time, and the first scene was somehow a bit hard to get into for me. But as I got used to it, I really started to enjoy it, and even though I don't have much in common with Laurence (I'm not rich at all, don't have a fulfilling job (yet, I hope), don't have children (yet), but still I could relate ...more

Simone de Beauvoir's Les Belles Images is about the role of women in a modernizing French society during the 1960s. As a femme au foyer (a housewife), Laurence - the novel's narrator - supposedly enjoys "le privilège" of having "tout [sa] temps" (all her time). However, trapped in the social 'image' of what a 'proper' woman should be and suffocated by the confines of a patriarchal household, she eventually descends into anxiety and anorexia.

Although the novel is set in an era where machines are

Preciosa. No esperaba mucho.

I picked this up by chance as I found a lovely vintage folio edition (not the inexplicably tacky 70s cover) and as it happens, this book was the perfect companion read to Les Choses at the top of my TBR pile this weekend. Both stories explore very similar themes. In fact, Perec refers to ‘Les belles images’ as the ‘moral’ counterpart of his novella. Reading them both back-to-back left me in a reflective mood... The central themes of the real vs. the imaginary (virtual) and social alienation are ...more

I read this because I was so sad to finish The Mandarins. Luckily for me, everything Simone de Beauvoir writes is a variation on what came before it. This doesn't end very satisfactorily, but it is such a rich description of a woman trying to be a mother, daughter, wife and lover in the face of her own existentialism. I can't help but love her.

"You cry out, you weep, you wring your hands, as though there was something in life worth these cries, these tears, these convulsive motions. And it's not

It took me a bit to get into it, because the author switches freely between first and third person and it took a chapter to realize that Laurence was “I” and it took a few lines to realize Laurence was female, because the name is male in English. (We love reversing genders on French names, don’t we, Michelle?)

Anyway - love love loved it. Real deep, earnest, true stuff in here about life, death, the unfairness of both, and the tenderness of growing up. Not bad fora novel essentially about an upp

Les Belles Image pulls back the covers on the moral corruption lurking just beneath the glossy surface of well-to-do Parisian society during the swinging 60s.

Laurence, the protagonist, has an abundance of material wealth and professional opportunities but she wonders, constantly, if is this all there is to life?

No happy endings to be found in this existential time travel. Just the perennial profound questions revisited, en francaise.
