This book and the ORIGINAL CLASSICS book are my GO TO COOKBOOK for basic American cooking. I often have to bring dishes to work potlucks and I usually pick a dish from these books and they are usually received well. I like this book a little better because the flavors are more ethnic and adventuresome. Many of the recipes are from Asian, Hispanic, African, Indian cultures along with other experimental American cuisine. The flavors are more experimental and exciting. Great gift to a new bride...more

I'm a long-time fan of Martha Stewart but this book simply does not do it for me. A volume this size would benefit from more photographs of finished dishes and an easier-to-read layout, especially as many of the recipes have numerous ingredients. I have yet to try anything from the book as it's just not grabbing me as a cookbook. I was lucky enough to get a barely touched copy for about five bucks and I can say that I'm very glad I didn't pay more because I don't think it will get much use. This...more

OK, so I'm not sure I'd call this classic, exactly, as there's a lot of what I'd consider frou frou included, but there were also a lot of good, just-fancy-enough-to-be-interesting whole food recipes. I was able to find a number of things that were both edible and tasty for my very restrictive diet, thus the four stars.

For such a big volume, I'm missing a few things...classics...okay I guess the title is The "NEW" Classics...but where are the photos??? For a lady who isn't just all about the taste, but also the presentation, we should see some of that presentation!

Just about every recipe you could ever need. If you are ever wondering how to make something, this book will tell you how. Pretty basic and easy to follow, but no pictures :( Its the betty crocker cookbook of my generation.

A great, wide resource... but it has some indexing issues.
Best pate brise recipe EVER though. It is my go-to recipe for all pie doughs. The page is covered in flour.

I am surprised by how much I like this--which is a good thing (to quote the woman herself) since this is one of the few cookbooks on ebooks

i absolutely hate her recipes. I mean who uses an entire lemon for linguine with clam sauce?
Annie
Good recipes but not for the novice. Some of the ingredients may be hard to find.

Lots of good stuff. Not as much of the old school stuff as I'd have hoped for but, hey, I could just go buy the old school book for that stuff since this is an updated version. Nice pictures of course and a nice section at the back for the "basics" like Pate Brisee.

Terrible. The index doesn't line up with the recipes. The recipes leave out key steps and ignore ingredients. While there would be some good recipes, the poor editing makes this impossible to use at times.
Gabrielle
Big and heavy. Some of the stuff, I would never make, but I got a few good ideas that I tried out. All from the last 8 years of the magazine.
Bridget
If you like her magazine, you will like her books. Very detailed.
Beka
Dry format, but the great recipes you expect from Martha.
