There are several "short" histories of France - and all of them fall short, as the country has such a complex and lengthy history that it's impossible to capture it in a good of 200 or even 300 pages. Along with history there are several short and not very helpful hints for travelers, so as one who is possibly traveling to France I'd certainly avoid it on that count.

This one, well reviewed by some, was to me rather weak, even among the other "shorties" - it touched on the major eras, and perhaps

Good short book to get an overview of the history of France. From the very beginnings to the formation of the EU.

The prose is stylish and sometimes funny.

Not so useful for travellers, despite the subtitle.

Good little book to give an over view of French history in a very general way. Very readible and not hugely detailed. It was perfect for what I wanted.
