“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.”
----Marie Curie

Similarly, for Jim Latimer, it was no time to fear for the mysteries waiting for him to unravel them in his life. Yes, Jim Latimer, protagonist of Niedermayer and Hart will strike you as a man who is brave yet scared to figure out the truth. M.J.Johnson, the author of this book, stunned our hearts and minds completely with his intense as well as alluring

4.5 STARS from me rather than just 4. Please ignore length of time taken to read as the story was put on hold due to other commitments.

To be honest I'm not sure how I came by a copy of this story but boy am I glad I did.

The story is similar to a dual time frame story as part of the action takes place in the here and now and some takes place in medieval times.

Jim Latimer takes up a position working for the company of Niedermayer & Hart as a photographer taking photos of porcelain for a catalo

Niedermayer and Hart in Barnswick Square, Hove looks unremarkable. Hove for all the northerners reading this is the posh bit attached to Brighton. Beneath its bland exterior is a form of evil, watching and waiting. Jim starts work there as a photographer cataloging porcelain and he soon becomes embroiled in the mystery of the dark presence. Interwoven in the story is a historical storyline. Slowly the reader starts to understand where the evil entity has come from and what it wants.

Having lived in Hove for 16 years I found this book interesting, intriguing and totally enjoyable. Knowing where the infamous Mr Niedermayer lived was both funny and terrifying. Just goes to prove how well written this book was. At the half way point I was wondering what on earth could happen next. The book appeared to be reaching a conclusion but..... It kept me thinking, wondering and totally hooked. Hopefully it will do the same for you!

If you enjoy this book then try Roadrage by the same au

I went through a Dennis Wheatley phase as a teenager, but haven't really strayed near to horror fiction since so Niedermayer & Hart is a departure from the norm for my reading. The book was recommended on twitter - and very reasonably priced for kindle - so I took a chance. I'm glad I did! The subject matter is classic for a horror story but with a sharp, contemporary viewpoint that I enjoyed reading.
The story has two strands, one set in the thirteenth century and one set in the 1990s. I lik

I absolutely loved, loved, loved this book!

It is a real page turner and had me gripped from the beginning. I really could not, and simply, DID NOT want to put it down.

'Niedermayer and Hart' is a brilliantly exciting horror story, that you can not fail to be drawn into. The story develops the concept of friendship, and strong bonds formed between individuals, and explores just how far people will go to help those that they love when they are in need.
Even if this connection of friendship has been

This is the first book I have read in awhile that took me back to the classic horror books I read in my younger days. You know those old, great books where terror consumes you, the horror slowly, relentlessly, grows, your heart beating so fiercely you fear for it while breathing becomes the most difficult thing to do. That absolutely describes my experience with Niedermayer & Hart. This is a book, I believe, is best read with little knowledge of what it is about. It is a bit long but so ...more

There’s something rotten in the basement of Niedermayer & Hart Fine Porcelain, which photographer Jim Latimer discovers to his peril. Jim has been commissioned by the company to photograph their collection for an upcoming catalogue, but he soon realises that there is something very wrong with his employers, and it isn’t long before he finds himself fighting to save his very soul.

Hugh Apsley, once a Knight Templar, has a very strange tale to relate to Brother Anselm of the Abbey of Valle Cruc

The author has a sample of this book on his website. I didn't even read the whole thing. I read the prologue and rushed off to buy it. I was intrigued and needed to find out more. Jim Latimer gets a job at Niedermayer & Hart and immediately you get the sense that there is something off about the place. There are two separate stories woven together, one historical and one contemporary, and eventually it becomes clear what the connection is. The author does an amazing job of giving you the ...more

I LOVED this book!!! Ever read a book and find yourself so consumed in it that you gasp out loud from what you have just read?? By the end of the prologue, I had done just that. I'm an eclectic reader, but don't drift towards horror-ish mysteries too often. So glad I did with this one!!! It is so well written, containing just enough of the necessary gore that your mind easily speeds to the dark crevices of imagination to which the author intended. The story line flawlessly flows without any dull ...more

Loved the storyline and couldn't wait to see how it ended, the only thing that spoilt it for me was that I was so engrossed with the present day characters that when it went back to Hugh's tale i was rushing to get through those chapters to get back to the present time. Just feel to start with the chapters of Hugh's tale was a bit slow where the rest of it was really gripping. Overall though a good book.

You could be smart and just read Martin Johnson’s “Niedermayer & Hart” on my say so, no questions asked. If you enjoy horror stories with a nice historical background, you will enjoy this book. If you liked “Quatermass and the Pit” (or the later “Five Million Years to Earth”) or Stephen Laws “Ghost Train,” you will like this book. If you like stories with a slow incremental unraveling of the true horror that lies beneath an antiques dealer in Hove (near Brighton, England), you will like this ...more

When I was at school, I would frequently spend whole weekends reading in my room, surfacing only for meals. It’s not often, in adult life, with its various responsibilities and eternal To Do list, that I curl up on the sofa and abandon myself to the pleasure of an afternoon’s uninterrupted reading, but having completed the Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon this morning, I reckoned I deserved it, and grabbed a blanket and my copy of Niedermayer & Hart with the intention of finishing the book.

An ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review. This did not influence my thoughts in any way.

Niedermayer & Hart is, more than anything else, a horror story. It is also a story about hope and the sheer power of friendship. The novel starts out as two different stories. The main is the story of Jim Latimer, a photographer hired by the porcelain company Niedermayer & Hart after the death of his predecessor. Interspersed with this storyline is that of Hugh, a Knight Templar strugglin

A Popular-Style Page-Turner

Mr. Johnson’s book belongs in the genre of paranormal/horror/suspense, a type of literature I don’t normally read. I was drawn to this book by the location and hints that a historical tale underlay the modern one. In fact, it is the constant cliff-hanger created by the alternation between the two plots – 12th century and 1990s – that keeps the reader eager to come back to the tale – usually a couple of modern chapters interleaved with one chapter of the historical stor

Chilling, and you can’t put it down.

Niedermayer and Hart is a good, lively horror story, that’s a great page turner with endearing protagonists. What’s most engaging is the build-up of horror, from small hints to out-and-out terror: the feelings of anticipation that are not disappointed. The idea of parallel reincarnated lives worked well, as did the sheer horror of the gory parts.

The scale of the terrible discoveries at the porcelain dealers’ premises in the seaside English was shocking and ex
