Strong characters, well-crafted story with intriguing subplots, and lots of local color. Virtanen clearly knows and loves the Adirondacks. One of the characters is based on a real rafting guide. Insiders probably will be able to figure out who.The River's Tale

“The River’s Tale” is the second book by local author Michael Virtanen. The suspense/mystery tells the story of Alison Reade, a young woman fleeing an abusive boyfriend who finds refuge on her aunt’s remote Hudson River camp. She eventually lands a job with a whitewater guide and finds romance. But danger lurks.

Unlike Virtanen's first book, “Within a Forest Dark,” which focused on insurance investigator Jack Kirkland, “The River’s Tale,” is written in the third person. You get to know what Aliso

Michael knows the Adirondack Mountains, and he creates a true sense of place with this, his second book. The tale itself -- a woman being stalked by an ex-boyfriend -- is weaved throughout wonderful scenes, settings, smaller tales, and strong characters. The strength of the book is actually in its other stories that involve the people who Alison, the lead character, intersects.
