This is the extraordinary story of a thousand days in the lives of Aamir Khan, Ashutosh Gowariker and their mammoth team which made a classic film. It journeys through the dreams and nightmares, the lonliness and comradeship, the despair and exhilaration of a unit numbering thousands, drawn from the far corners of the globe, as it battled it out in the heat of the Kutch ...more

Written by Satyajit Bhatkal, 'The Spirit of Lagaan' is a powerful, moving book on the journey of the making of 'Lagaan', a film by Ashutosh Gowariker. It is a memory spanning 200+ pages, on how the actors, production team and director made a path-breaking film, but in fact, the film ended up making each individual a little bit of who they are today. This book isn't meant only for those passionate about films or film-making but it goes beyond, to readers young and old, who are passionate about ...more

Satyajit Bhatkal provides us with all of the trials and tribulations that the Lagaan team had to endure in order to put out this immensely successful film. From the conception of the story to the editing, no details are left out. Reading the book will make you appreciate the patience and persistence of Ashutosh, Aamir, and especially Aamir's wife Reena.

Besides the writing itself, the book is a great read and will definitely motivate you to work that much harder to make your dreams come true.

Often times we overlook the ordeal the filmmakers go through to make a film. And given that this film was to challenge the very shackles of tiresome bollywood scripts was an achievement in itself.
A great insight into the making of this magnum opus. If reading about how a film was made is boring then watch the film Chale Chalo. Its as entertaining as Lagaan and shares the same core as this book. Respect!

It was very nice to read this book after watching the movie.
The effort that goes into making a movie. Great description of the situations and event and the zeal of a man to do something he believed in.
Good Work.

An uplifting story.
Really fascinated me. I loved the movie, so the book was an interesting look into how it happened. Also I liked this window into the world of Bollywood film production and the ethos of some of Bollywood's big names.
