Yet victory brings no peace to the elderly Danish King Sweyn, who worries that his untested, sensitive son Canute will never be ready to take the throne. Superb! The first thing that blows me away as I open this book and start reading is the stunning art. Intricate, detailed, realistic, with a just a few traditional manga catchings; it is honestly the most gorgeous piece of manga of read to date. This book heavily concentrates on the Danes attack of England; there is much battle and that is the main action throughout as they cross England, Wales and Mercia. A lot of character development is undergone especially concerning our main character, ...more

Very beautiful - I love the realism that some historical manga can achieve. I think this one is more violent than the first volume, if I remember correctly - and it includes sexual violence. Thorfinn isn't morally neutral but compared to the other Vikings he is in a relatively neutral place, or, at least, he's so focused on his own pain and revenge that he can't bother philosophizing about the pain of others. So far this series is pulling off giving a violent culture a complex and characterized ...more

Ο ιστορία κλιμακώνεται, τα σχέδια είναι χαρά οφθαλμού, οι βικινγκς ξυπνάνε αναμνήσεις από εφηβικά αναγνώσματα... Τι άλλο να θέλει κανείς;

Super awesome series! For sure one of my all time favourite manga series.

Better, especially now that I have a better understanding of what the manga is about. For a while I wasn't too sure of where the author was going with this, as it originally looked like it was a revenge story but that aspect of the manga was really dragging. But now, I understand that it looks like it's less about the main character, and more about historical events, with some loops thrown in. Interesting.

Another great entry into this series. I love how they compiled 14 chapters into one volume. I felt this one read smoother and made more sense than the last one, though this could be my understanding of it. This is one of few manga series I follow. I enjoyed the character Thorkell; he was funny.

Again, it was quite entertaining and seriously feels like the spiritual sequel of Vikings and The Last Kingdom. I do need a break from it, because it can be a bit too much with the blood and violence and gore. I know those times were brutal and the book is authentic in portraying the effects of Viking raids and invasions, but reading all of the volumes at once is a bit overwhelming.

Following the events of the first omnibus, this book follows Askeladd's Viking band, including the fierce little warrior Thorfinn, on their adventures during the Danish King Sweyn's campaign to conquer England. In their path is Thorkell, Viking who fights on the side of the English, mostly because he finds his own compatriots more of a challenge to fight.

Makoto Yukimura impressed me with this first volume, and his sense of dramaturgy, narrative structure and visual composition holds the same hig

Just like the previous book this is the continued journey of Thorfinn as he continues to get stronger and seeks revenge for his father who sacrificed everything for his son and village (sorry was that a spoiler? Perhaps you should have read a volume one preview first if it is.) This series is rated Older Teen for not only violence and gore but at least one instance of a woman being knocked into submission and bound so she can be violated by invading vikings (as I mentioned might happen in my ...more

To recap for those of you who haven’t read the review of Book One, Vinland Saga is set in the early 12th Century, the time of the Vikings. Our protagonist is Thorfinn, son of Thors, who serves in the war band of Askeladd. Askeladd murdered Thors, and Thorfinn serves the wily warrior for the sole purpose of one day getting revenge in a fair duel.

In this volume, the action shifts to the British Isles, and the war of King Sweyn Forkbeard against King Ethelred the Unready. While Ethelred himself has

This is the second omnibus in the Vinland Saga historical manga series. I continue to be blown away by the incredible artwork, wonderful characterization, and excellent story in this series.

Askeladd and his band of warriors continue rampaging through England and end up in battle with London where they meet the rather viciously hilarious Thorkill. We also meet Prince Canute whom Askeladd decides to go on a mission and rescue in order to win the Danish King Sweyn’s favor. Whoever holds Prince Canu

This omnibus collects volumes 3 and 4 of Vinland Saga (as originally published).

It's likely easy enough to pick up the basics of Vinland Saga and follow along starting here, but the first double-volume omnibus established a significant amount of lore and characters. It would be much better to go back to the beginning.

Yukimura's dense viking epic continues as Askeladd's band takes its place among King Sweyn's army as they overrun England. Troubles in London bring the king's son into a central ro

Wow! This just keeps getting better and better. I don't think a manga has excited me this much since Death Note. It's really not fair to compare the two series as, aside from generally excellent art and story, they really don't have much in common. Yes, the action is kicked up a notch from traditional historical sagas, but it's grounded in such seemingly thorough research that it works. Characters are quite believably motivated, even the ones who are clearly onstage just to be defeated. And ...more

Another brilliant volume of Vinland Saga. It's still the best manga of a brutal and bloody but emotionally genuine and expertly executed story of war and brotherhood I've read in recent years, centered in a time period and culture that rarely if ever gets a manga treatment like this one. Yukimura has the art, the storyboarding, the characters, and the pacing that all together makes Vinland Saga a must read series. I am loving how the various characters are developing and who they are becoming ...more

Really looking forward to the next book

After listening to the Vikings course via Great Courses on Audible, I have been looking into more of the Viking histories, sagas, and eddas. I took a flyer on this manga series and so far the story is tight. The history of the raiding periods throughout Scandinavia and England during the 10th and 11th centuries provide some amazing tales.

Another bloodbath, another lil flashback or two (a chapter of Ylva's dealing with the loss of her father & brother and now pretty much becoming head of the household) and lets face it ... Askeladd is the star of this volume! He's got some pretty big plans and is using ALL the sides to get it working

There is no doubt about it. This is the best series i am currently reading at the moment (bar the regular drug that is robert kirkman). This series is just one big achievement for the writer makoto yukimura. I am by no means a manga nut. However the quality of the art and storytelling cant help but bowl you over. This series is a must read in my opinion.

I still love this comic!

But this time I felt like the omnibus didn't revolve so much around Thorfinn this time, and that made me disappointed. It's still fun, and there was a lot of revealing stuff about the characters, but there was too much war and such in my opinion.

But even though this was not the best volumes so far, I just cannot wait to get my hands on the next omnibus!
Lol, I read the 2nd book first without realizing it. Pretty good if you like lots of blood thirsty men with terrible morals. Easy to follow and plenty of stabbing in the neck and cutting off fingers. Also throws in some Viking/Saxon/Britannia/Welsh facts for the history buffs.

This series reminds me of why I read manga. The kind of visual storytelling on display is unparalleled in American comics. Mood, plot, attention to historical detail, character arcs - Makoto Yukimura has mastered them all.

I'm really enjoying this Viking based manga. The mangaka has done a lot of obvious research into the topic and I love complicated relationships such as the one young Thorfinn shares with his nemesis, Askeladd. Naturally it's rather violent but what do you expect from Vikings?

Just... Wow. Makoto Yukimura is just amazing. The art is somehow even better than the first book. The story is more brutal, we get more characters and... Just wow. This is my favorite Manga to date
Gory, sad in places, but really well done. I feel I'm not going to love the story because of its brutality but the artwork is fantastic and I love historical period manga.
