Dr Marcel Petiot seems to be to the French what Jack the Ripper was to Victorian England. Both held the populace of their respective countries in a web of irresistible, if gruesome fascination. I confess though that I hadn’t heard of Dr Petiot.

Therefore, hats off to Marilyn Tomlins for a clearly thoroughly researched piece of journalism, although it has the readability of fiction. Knowing that it’s founded in truth makes this book all the more riveting though. As another reviewer has commented,
