I'm a big fan of Margaret Yorke, maybe her biggest fan -- I've never heard anybody else gush with praise about her. Her writing style is unique, being far less conversation-dependent than most yet following a strong, brisk narrative line via her characters' thoughts and actions. To turn up a book by her that I've never read is a special treat for me. The last of her 43 novels was published in 2001. The Cost of Silence is from 1977 and serves as an excellent example of why I like her work so much ...more

Nice cosy village murder story, perfect after a heavy read.

Even though this was one of Yorke's earlier books, I enjoyed it just as much as more recent ones. Her characters are always so easy to get to know and love and you always know things will work out in the end...maybe :)

1977 was a good year for Yorke as this was when it was originally published.
