This book is about a hero that we can all relate to. Dresden is a normal young man who didn't have aspirations to become a hero. It is inspiring to see how he grows into the role and to witness his struggles with the realisations of what it means to be a hero.

There are a number of characters that you very quickly grow attached to. There is such depth, intrigue and strength to them that it is easy to relate to them and like them.
Not far below the surface of the story are some interesting ideas

Started with a good pace and kept my attention. The only thing keeping me from rating it an easy 5 stars is the multiple cultures that confused me a bit. Other than this i thoroughly enjoyed the book. Very good fights and enough sadism to keep me wanting the hero to prevail. I definitely look forward to the next installment of the series.

The Torment, The Shadow, The Heart is a new work by a new author, and what a tale this author has to tell. With the very first pages, I was sucked in by the "in media res" of the story, which begins with some world building and the introduction of Dresden, the titular Hero of Talbadas, dallying with an elf. We then flash back to the beginnings of Dresden's, and the kingdom's, long trials. The story slowed down a little bit at this point, but that was probably a necessity. We have to know who ...more

Shelves: my-works
Drawing from the heartfelt, humorous and horrific sides of human nature, and using authentic 14/15th century European martial art "Kunst des Fechten," The Torment, The Shadow, The Heart is my first novel, and a 6-year labour of love.

This combines my passion for writing, fantasy, martial arts, most things medieval and many things viking. Thanks to translations and understanding of the 1459 and 1467 Talhoffer fechtbuchs, the martial arts took a turn for the better.
