This book is told through the POV of the man who babysits, befriends and eventually has babies with Damia, the Rowan's psychic daughter. Boring as only McCaffrey can manage.

Not sure I'm going to be able to finish a rereading of this one. I last read this in jr high or high school, and remember quite liking the character of Afra. I still do, but there's a whole lot else about this book I don't like. The Rowan, who was a pretty good character in the last book of the series, is the stereotypical overworked mother. If the book wasn't written by a woman I'd honestly have a tough time not thinking this were some sort of criticism of working mothers. Maybe it is anyh...more

Having just read Get Off the Unicorn, Rowan's back story was pretty fresh in my head. It was probably too fresh in my mind as I found myself going from feeling bored to feeling a little icky.
The first 100 pages are basically a recap of the previous versions of the story. It's a long and drawn-out "previously on Young and the Telepathic" and a complete waste of time.

This is the second in McCaffrey's Talent series. It is focused on Damia, the Rowan and Jeff Raven's youngest daughter and their long-time friend, Afra Lyon. It actually picks up before the start of the first book and follows the events from Afra's point of view until Damia is born.
Of the whole series, this is my least favorite, but it is still amazing. The only reason it only has four stars is because I haven't figured out if you can give half-stars.

Found this at a church book sale years ago. I don't think I realized it wasn't the first book in this series when I bought it, but I got the rest of the series out of the library and read them all. McCaffrey always has interesting characters and worlds; the Rowan's is no exception.

Nobody does fluffy fantasy-romance like Anne McCaffrey, but there's better stuff out there with more substance. That said, I even subjected my Dad to a few of her novels and he actually didn't mind them too much. More about that later. This is part of a series of books concerning a family with powerful metal abilities - telepathy and the like. This particular one is mostly concerned with a question of age between the lovers. the first half is a recap of The Rowan which is tedious when you have just read that. Rowan who was for the most part a sympathetic cyharacter in her story becomes and over-bearing and unbalanced one in much of this. While Damia starts out well, one can sympathize with her situation she becomes intollerable for untill the end in an about face that is a little too pat. That said I will probably read the others in the series just because I can not let a story go unfinished.

After reading the Rowan I wanted to know what else happened.
I wasn't ready for Damia. The twisting love story and search that Damia leads herself into is just so interesting. She was selfish and different; yet she was good and sweet too.
Loved it. I adore her and Afra.

My friend Heather was really into this author when we were about thirteen, but I just couldn't get into her books. This title was lying around at Heather's and I picked it up because I was bored. Reading it did not alleviate my boredom, although it was far better than its sequel.

Ugh. Not terrible but never grabbed my attention. Could have been because the main character was terribly annoying. Man, I hate that. If I'm stuck reading a book which revolves around a central character it would be nice if the character didn't suck.

The book that introduced me to the Talent of Anne McCaffrey. Wow. This started weeks of frantic reading,tracking down everything Anne McCaffrey had anything written. First the Talents, then the Pern series. MUCH FUN.

This is the story of Damia Raven, daughter of The Rowan, also a high ranked psi talent. She is sent to run a new commerce and communications tower, and tells the story of her growing up, and falling in love.

Of the Rowan series, this is my favorite book. Maybe its because I have always wanted a white streak in my hair, or the fact that Damia and I share something tragic in common. Either way, I really like this book.

I enjoyed the portrait of children with talent. Damia had more character development than most McCaffrey heroines. A fun book with an interesting dovetail into the series with Afra.

Eh. Don't bother with this McCaffrey series of telepaths in space, having tepid relationships while throwing cargo ships around. Stick with the Pern series.
