I'm familiar and comfortable with Japanese culture, but not so much the authors. I am also a non-fiction junkie, so getting into Japanese fiction has been a slow process.
Vintage Murakami is a great potpourri with chapters from his most critically acclaimed books as well as a few rarely seen short stories. It was a captivating read, particularly the chapters from The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles (Long Story I and II) of which I look forward to reading the complete book.

Murakami to me is my favorite literary find of the past couple of years. His writing and stories are very cultural and specific to japan but yet universal enough for anyone to read. It makes me wonder how many great reads we are missing because publishers don't want to pay to translate these books. Oh well I guess I could learn how to speak and read every language out there and that would solve that problem.

I had read several of the works in this collection already-- but it is still Murakami and still a great read. The book is a collection of chapters from his novels and short stories. If you've read all of his other books you will not find much of anything you haven't seen before in this book.

I've read it before, but I'm reading it again. Somehow I get lulled back into the interesting worlds Murakami paints and I am once again intrigued by this still not-quite-so-well-known unique writer. Even the paraphrased interview is written in artistic voice.

This is a collection of bits and pieces of other Murakami works. I didn't end up reading the whole thing, only stories I hadn't already read and one or two that I had.

Just a rehash of what I already had read of his. The material was good, it's just reading the same stuff over again that sucked.

A great primer of the writings of an amazing author. I look forward to reading many more by him.
