"The main plot of this Pern novel, set just prior to the Second Pass of thread, is about a despotic Lord Holder who refuses to believe the danger is real. I do love McCaffrey's Dragonriders series and I'm afraid I spent more time cataloging the differences than I did analyzing the story.
Changes are occurring in this Second Pass of Thread. Some people are starting to use "Turn" instead of "year". Fort Hold is building a separate College building for teaching and laboratories because the cave system at Hold is unstable. It will become the Harper Hall somewhere...more

Thread is about to menance the planet of Pern once again. Lord Holders and Weyrleaders alike believe it's going to happen all except Lord Chalkin of Bitra. Lord Chalkin doesn't believe ancient foe of Pern is going to happen and wants proof that it will happen inspite of countless records denoting that it will. A solid read with plenty of secondary plots to keep my interest when the primary plot--centered around the monstrosities committed by a Lord Holder as he plunges Bitra into a state of despotism--failed to. I found Chalkin to be lackluster as an antagonist, more a petulant child than a towering tyrant. It seemed as though McCaffrey was unwilling to advance beyond "he's a bad guy" when forming Chalkin's character, and stuffed him with tropes accordingly.

As this was my second Anne McCaffrey book I've ever read, I am now realizing why so many people have fallen in love with her writing. Her writing is brilliant. I don't know what it is, perhaps the subtlety of the development of the characters, she doesn't spell everything out and allows the imagination to take over and develop connections with her characters, but by the end of the book, I am in love with her characters and truly feel like I'm at Pern with them ready for Thread to fall. It has been 250 years since the last threadfall and many don't believe that thread will fall again. Pern still has a few remnants of the technology brought by the first colonists, but most of it is worn out.

• Much like the other Pern books I’ve read so far, this book was a page turner. I have noticed that in this book as well as the others A.M. has focused a lot on the Pernese politics and the events leading up to the fall of Thread. She does it in a way that remains interesting throughout. If I had one gripe it would be that sometimes she seems to throw storylines in just for their political effect. Just going by my personal Pern favorites, I think McCaffrey does her best work when packing a standalone story into a standalone book. Set all by itself in the 3rd century of the planet's history, McCaffrey's forced to invent an all new cast of characters and flesh them out. The result is lovely and unique. This book was quite far into the series, however it chronicles the second Fall which is quite far before the activities of the first few books. Since the inhabitants were just starting to lose their technology for good (the computers died completely and solar panels were becomoing scarce and precious) you really got a sense of the reasonings behind certain things and the 'real' names of things from the first few books. Covers the beginning of the second pass since Landing, and the first where the residents of Pern don't have the technology of the original colonists at their disposal. Most of the tension comes from 1) Disbelief by the lord holders that thread is coming back (yes, exactly like in the very first book) and 2) Lifestyle changes brought on by failing technology. A decent entry in the saga, but not necessary.
This book was really neat because it showed how they regressed from a technologically advanced society to the more medieval-type society found in the other Pern books. However, that said, I did not particularly care for this book. It was written decades after the original books, and it appears the author was going for the "shock factor" going into unnecessary detail about the suffering and violence of the time period. I cannot imagine enjoying reading this if you weren't already a fan of her work. It reads like fan fiction, with gay characters. I still have issues with her insistence on artistic types being made of nobler cloth, as well as with her romanticization of male dominance in male-female relationships, but I'm just trying to get through the grab bag of sci-fi books I was given so I can send books like these, especially, to Goodwill.
This is yet another journey into Pern's past. This time it's the months leading up to the 2nd Pass and the people of Pern are preparing for the return of Thread and dealing with their rapidly diminishing technical resources, establishing a uniquely Pernese culture in the process. A whole new generation on Pern was introduced in this book and it felt like a lot of the same characters and incidents, but with different names. Always a difficult Lord Holder, always one of the Weyrleaders are stuffy, and the relationships are rather predictable. I was disappointed that Debra and Iantine's story was left unfinished. A lot seemed unfinished. It isn't that I hated this book but it didn't really need to be written at all. Stick to the characters we already know and love!
This was one Pern novel that I didn't care very much for, despite the series being among my favourites. There were some quibbles, but overall it's still a decent read, just not a great one.

This book filled in a lot of the gaps in reader knowledge of the transitions between the ways and traditions of the first settlers of Pern and those of later inhabitants, which I appreciated. The storyline and characters were all okay, certainly much better than some of the other Pern books, and overall I enjoyed reading this one.
I think this might be one of my most favorite settings for the Pern books: second pass, when there's still some memory of technology and understanding of their roots, though I do also love the first pass, when even with all that technology they still can't quite defeat the menace of Thread.
another great story of Pern. this book takes place just prior and up to the second pass. its been 200 years of inactivity and now the red planet has once again come into the close proximity to Pern and is dropping thread. alot of the book has to do with a lorf holder that doesnt believe that the thread will drop, that it is all just a myth made up. a very good read.
Superb, a captivating and thrilling ride, packed with action and romance. Definitely one of my favourites in the Pern series, perhaps because it features a rare hero who isn't part of the dragonriders, the harpers or any other main crafthall.
The McCaffreys have got to be my favorite science fiction authors ever. I got hooked on Pern during high school when I read the Harper Hall Trilogy, and then I went on to explore the rest of the world with Anne and Todd in the book adventures of a lifetime. I highly recommend any of the Dragonriders of Pern book series for any science fiction lover.

I loved her whole series, read almost all of them- or perhaps I did get all the way through. I just lived for her books when I was younger. I have to check maybe I did read this or maybe I didn't -mmm- just sounds familiar
Grade A-. Book P01b (my chronology). An overview story of the second pass and conversion from Earth methods to Pern methods. No major characters although artist Iantine is close. Only one major skim/speed read area in chapter 5.
It was extremely confusing at first. Had to go back to the beginning a couple times. I have mixed feelings about how good it really was. I'm giving it three stars because it wasn't bad, but it wasn't exactly special, either.
I liked this book for the same reasons that I like the series--the melding of science, a good story, and fantasy elements into one. My one complaint is that at one point I felt like the story was over but there were actually like three chapters after it. But it was still enjoyable.
I really enjoy this traditional sci-fi/fantasy series set on the planet Pern...where Earth's escapees ended up. This takes place centuries in the future where our time is considered ancient history. There did seem to be some formatting issues with this Kindle edition, but nothing that put me off the story enough to stop reading.
I enjoyed the multiple story lines, seeing potentials for more books based on each character.
The shift away from technology also was well explained, & the 'future' books made more sense.
