I used The Grouchy Ladybug in my class when discussing time. The book has a mini-clock in the corner of each page and talks about what the lady bug did at that time. I started out the activity by reading the page aloud and then assigning a student to show the time on a large manipulate clock and asked the other kids to give a thumbs up/down if they agreed with the answer. I then showed them the picture and we checked the answer with what was in the book. The modifications I would make for ne...more

After I had read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” I really wanted to read more books by Eric Carle. “The Grouchy Ladybug” is definitely no exception in reading some of Eric Carle’s great works! “The Grouchy Ladybug” is a Laura Ingalls Wilder award –winning book by Eric Carle and it is about how a grouchy ladybug tries to pick a fight with the other animals no matter how large they are. “The Grouchy Ladybug” is truly one of the most hilarious books about the consequences of bullying that every c...more

The Grouchy Ladybug, follows an insect through her day, providing some preschool-level humor along with a little bit of learning. This ladybug, however, has a serious attitude and challenges every creature she sees to a fight. When her challenge is accepted, she spits "Oh, you're not big enough" and flies on. The story progresses on cutaway pages, each revealing a larger animal, until she finally meets a whale who dramatically puts her in her place. Each page also shows the traject...more

Summary: This book is similar to "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." It starts out with a grouchy lady bug meeting a friendly ladybug. The grouchy ladybug wants to eat all the aphids and the friendly lady bug suggests that they share. But that's not good enough for the grouchy ladybug so he asks "...do you want me to fight you for them?" The other ladybug said "If you insist." The grouchy ladybug then says "Oh, you're not big enough for me to fight." So he flew...more

This book is about two ladybugs trying to eat bugs from the same leaf, one of which is friendly, the other is grouchy. Not wanting to share, the grouchy ladybug offers to fight the friendly ladybug for food but then declines because the ladybug claims the friendly one is not big enough to fight. The grouchy ladybug flies off and encounters many different bugs and animals at different time intervals and wants to fight them but later declines because they too are "not big enough."Aft...more

This is quite possibly my favorite book from Eric Carle. The humor works very well as this ornery ladybug looking for a fight flits from one large animal to another one that's even bigger to another one that's even bigger and so on, challenging them all but ultimately evading combat each step of the way by making the increasingly prepostrous claim that they're "not big enough" to fight him. This pattern continues until one can't help but laugh out loud at the ridiculous scenes as they...more

I love Eric Carle. At first, I didn't I thought I was going to be let down by this book. The first few pages didn't seem as good as The Very Hungry Caterpillar or The Very Quiet Cricket. But, once I turned the page and got to the different sized pages, I knew it would be great. I really liked how this book teachers time with an analog clock in the corner of each page. I like the animals increasing in size, and how the font increased in size, too. I loved the different sized pages because i...more

The Grouchy Ladybug was an amazing book. It's about a grouchy ladybug, who meets a nice ladybug and wants to fight with her because she didn't want to share the aphids that were on the leaf. The grouchyladybug wanted to fight the nice one, for the aphids but decided that she wansn't "big enough" to fight, so she flew away in search of someone to fight. At the corner of each page, there is a little clock that shows you what time it is, and what the ladybug is doing at that time. That wa...more

I read this book for a lesson on telling time and I LOVED IT! I loved how it has the pictures of the clocks in the corner because they are providing children with a viual of the time stated in that particular page. Also, it is such a fun book to read to children. My class had so much fun with it. They thought it was hilarious when the grouchy lady bug said, "You want to fight?" They also made a lot of predictions during the read aloud about what animals they thought would come next (ta...more

The Grouchy Ladybug demands another ladybug leave because it wants all the aphids. When a fight is offered, the grouchy ladybug leaves in a huff, claiming the friendly ladybug is not big enough to fight. A yellow jacket, scorpion, elephant and whale are all declared not big enough to fight by the grouchy ladybug. The whale won't answer. The ladybug talks to different parts of the whale until the tail gives a most definitive answer. Getting smacked by a whale's tail gives the grouchy ladybug ...more

This is a classic Eric Carle book. He teaches various concepts in this book. There are many activities that could be done with this book.
It can be used to teach students about sequencing. The book goes in such a smooth order that it would be a good book to for students to start to sequence independently.

This is a good math book to teach time and counting. The time is taught throughout the book. Students could read along with a plastic clock. Also, they could record what they ...more

This is a great book, easily one of my favorites from Eric Carle. It teaches a number of great lessons for young children -- about being kind, that if you go around looking for a fight you'll get one. So it's more than a picture book with a cute story. This is a book every parent should read with their kids. My son loved it; I loved it. An easy five stars.

After reading it, I was a bit appalled to see that the two most recent Amazon.com reviewers claim the book glorifies fighting. Reall...more

1. Picture book: Concept
2. A grouchy ladybug tries to picks fights with others; however, instead of fighting, she cowardly flies off to pick another fight with another insect/animal. As the day gets later and later, the insects/ animals she picks fights with get bigger and bigger.
3. A. Type; Concepts/themes taught
B. One downfall to this book is on one page, the typography is quite small for beginning reader. However, this error of sorts is so minute when compared to the st...more

This is a wonderful book to read to children about different emotions. It is also an excellent way that children can learn about time and different times of the day (morning, evening, night). I love the way the book is designed. The pages start out small and increase in size as the book goes along. The book uses a lot of retitive phrases in so that the children can help read the book aloud.

Learning activity:

I will give the children materials to make a ladybug clock. The ...more

I recently read this book and I was impressed at the versatility of it. There are so many concepts being touched upon in this book. First, there are the different emotions such as kindness and grouchiness, that children can relate to. Then you have the concept of small, large, larger, largest. next you have the concept of time being touched upon. This book can really be used in a classroom in a variety of ways. I also think that it can span a lot of different grades from pre-K to about 2nd grade...more

What I like about Eric Carle books is that they are very simple, yet still work on multiple levels. The Grouchy Ladybug is a perfect example of this. The bright illustrations and very, very repetative story will appeal to the youngest child, but there are hidden lessons about more advanced concepts like telling time. And the humour is quite sophisticated: as the lady bug keeps challenging other animals to fight instead of declining or moralizing how fighting is wrong, each animal stands up to th...more

Because "The Cowardly, Passive-Aggressive Ladybug" wasn't nearly as catchy a title...

A pretty accurate depiction of what's going on in the minds of those cage-rattling fear-mongers out there, this is a great book for kids. Read on as the Grouchy Ladybug's escalating threats of violence are met by the other animals that stand tall against her idle threats; read on as she backs down with false bravado every time. Deep down, s/he really just needs the same thing as the rest ...more

Genre: Picture book-- Concept

Summary: Carle provides readers with amazing illustrations while discussing manners and social behavior. Many concepts are introduced like size and telling time.

Critique:

a. The greatest strength in this book is that Carle is trying to get many points across to readers such as manners. This is huge.

b. With such younger readers, teaching manners is very important at such a young age. Also, the author is intro...more

MY REVIEW:

The Grouchy Ladybug is the story of a ladybug who is very grouchy. So grouchy that he is ready to pick a fight with everyone he comes upon. That is until he realized just how big they are!

I liked this cute little story because of it's fun storyline and unique way of teaching time to children. On each hour the ladybug meets someone else and the story tells what time it is while showing a traditional clock in the top of the page. There are also some neat featu...more

I read this book to my nine month old grandson as he was taking his bottle, all the while thinking, I can't believe I haven't read this before now! It was charming, of course -- after all, there's a reason it's a classic! I loved the way the grouchy ladybug "bully" hides her cowardice behind her bluster, just like real grouchy "bullies" do. And need I say anything about the vivid illustrations and the cool way the pages are cut down to different sizes? I think what I like...more

Eric Carle is genius in his creation of children's stories and illustrations. In this, my personal favorite, the reader goes on a journey with a ladybug who woke up on the wrong side of the bed! The possibilites of lessons and activities with this book are endless. The time aspect is a given and students can practice their proficiency in telling time by following the ladybug throughout the story. From a science standpoint, students can learn about animals, their habitat, and their natural defens...more

I personally love this book. I think all of Eric Carle's books are great for young children. I like this one in particular because of all of the different animals illustrated. It is a good learning experience for children about animals which I love. I also like the way the pages are different lengths. It adds another element for children's pleasure. Something else I noticed in this book was that there are little clocks in the corners of the page for each different time the ladybug tries to fight...more

This book would be perfect for kids in the 2nd or 3rd grade. I think that the main idea of this book was about bullying. The grouchy ladybug challenged everyone to a fight but when he realized that they were stronger than him he backed off. I can see myself reading this book to the kids in my class. The lesson plan would surround the whole concept of bullying and how sometimes people may bully you just to prove to people that they are stronger than you, but if you stand up to them, more than lik...more

This classic children's book would be great for reviewing time and manners! You could remind the students the importance of a positive and caring attitude and along side that the students could review their time! It would be cute to let each one of the students have a small clock and at each hour through out the book have the students put the correct time on their clock! That would be a great time for the teacher to observe what students have time down or other students who might need a little m...more

The story tells the details of a ladybugs journey over the course of a day. I would use this story in my classroom to have students model the time as we read on individual clocks (simply made like a spinner). I like how each page has a picture of the analog time, I could use this for students to check their answers as we read by holding the book under my document camera. As an extension activity, I could have students write their own story about their own lives spanning the course of one day....more

The Grouchy Ladybug is a great book for introducing a lesson on telling time. The book tells the story of the day in the grouchy ladybug's life. As it goes through the day it tells what time it is and shows a miniature clock that shows that time. I love to share this book with kindergarten and first grade classes when I am introducing time. It is a fun way to get the students involved and thinking about what it means and looks like to tell time. There is not much more I can say about this book b...more

This is a very funny book that children would love. The lady bug goes around tryying to fight all the other animals, but no one would fight her. As the story progresses the animals get bigger and bigger. The children can tell that the lady bug is getting smaller. At the end, the lady bug is splashed by a dolphin's blowhole and she does not try to fight anyone anymore. This is a good book to teach about measurement and size. It also has different times on each page so you can use it to teach elap...more

The ending scenario is heartwarming when the friendly ladybug offers the remaining aphids to the grouchy lady bug, even after the grouchy ladybug was rude. Often times retaliation occurs when someone wrongs us. This story is a good way to demonstrate that even when somebody else does something that hurts your feelings, the right thing to do is be nice to them. Eric Carle's "partial pages" appear again as time ticks throughout the story. With the image of clocks on each page this can b...more

This is a lovely book about a grouchy lady bug that tries to fight other animals. I could use this book several ways.
Math- I could start a lesson on time and counting hours. I could have them look at plastic clocks and turn to the time we ate talking about in he book.
Order/ sequencing- this book flows wonderfully from one event to the next. The students could put events in the order they go in while focusing on whether first, second....
We could also focus on different emotions an...more

The grouchy lady bug is a fun and interactive story about time. There is a nice lady and a grouchy lady bug. The grouchy lady bug goes to fight other animals at different times. This story does a great job of showing students the concept of time. For example, when the lady bug reaches a whale, it takes 15 minutes before she reaches the fin. This is how the students know that the whale is so big compared to the lady bug. The interactive clock was so fun and each child was able to make the time wi...more
