Good information about social trends in the 1800's, but a slow read at times.

In this well researched and entertaining history of the vegetarian movement in the United States, a colorful cast of characters—including Sylvester Graham and his rock-hard wheat bread, Bronson Alcott and his failed New England fruitopia, J. I tried, I really and truly tried but despite an interesting topic and good research I couldn't get through this book to save my life. The writer's style isn't terrible but the haphazard organization of the material distracted me as did the repetition of a handful of facts.

On the plus side I did learn a few facts about the history of the meatless movement such as granola was invented in the 1860's.
