Kali ini tokohnya beda lagi, Conrad Tesdinic bocah 12 tahun dari Dunia No.7

This was fun, too. I liked Conrad as a character, but not as much as I like Christopher. It was so much fun to see Christopher a few years later through someone else's eyes. I loved how haughty and arrogant he is but doesn't even realize it and thinks that other people just don't understand or are envious. And I love how vain he's getting. So funny. And Conrad could be funny too, especially when talking about his Evil Fate. The only thing that felt off in this one was their ages. Conrad's suppos...more

I haven't read any of the Chrestomanci books since I was quite wee; I'm not sure what made me want to pick this one up now, but it was enjoyable even with a blurred memory of the context of the rest of the series. I enjoyed the first half of the book the best, when Conrad has no idea what's going on and Christopher gets to be cocky and mysterious and delightfully obnoxious. The end, in comparison, was unfortunately rather muddled: too much happening at once, and then that big jump forward in tim...more

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the previous Chrestomanci books by Diana Wynne Jones.
In Conrad's Fate, Conrad has applied to work for Stallery, because his uncle has convinced him that he has bad karma. In order to get rid of his karma, he needs to find someone in Stallery that he has to kill. Once he has killed this person, his karma will go back to normal.
So, Conrad applies for an apprenticeship, and he meets up with Christopher, the nine-lived enchanter (from previ...more

I enjoyed this book. It dealt with Wynne Jones' favorite topic--the abuse and neglect children can suffer from their parents, and how they need to overcome it to create their own adopted families that love them. She has dozens of novels with castles and palaces in them, but this is the first time we see them from the servants' point of view, which is an eye-opening experience for Christopher.
I found myself enjoying Conrad. He is a simpler character than usual(he is described as having...more

So I really didn't like the past couple of Chrestomanci books, but Conrad's Fate (Chrestomanci, #5) totally redeemed the series for me :) Admittedly it took me AGES to read this because I've been busy, but I really did enjoy reading it when I was able to pick it up.
I loved this one because it featured Christopher Chant/Chrestomanci for the entire series, he didn't just show up at the end to save the day. I also loved it because Christopher/Chrestomanci is quite young in the book - h...more

This book wasn't as fascinating or engrossing as the other Chrestomanci's stories earlier. (Though "Witch Week" I found a bit weak, too.)
It is interesting, though, to see Christopher when he's young again. He's still as arrogant as before, though!

This story is a good example of Diana Wynne Jones' work; good, but utterly confusing, and needs at least two reads to fully understand all that she weaves into her stories. Because of this I rate her stories lower; I think an important part of storytelling requires a bit more clarity. However, this wouldn't be as fun to read as many times as it is if it weren't for the difficulty I had in understanding what was going on plotwise, I suppose. The characters were alright, but a little flat emotiona...more

recommends it for:
Chrestomanci fans and everyone else
Whilst I don't think it is one of the best of Diana Wynne Jones' that I have read, and not among my favourites in the Chrestomanci series - I still really enjoyed this book so it does pain me to give it only three stars. Maybe 3.79 stars would be more appropriate, but that is details.

Another good Chrestomanci book. Unfortunately, it's got roughly the same plot twists as some of Mrs. Jones' previous books, so if you've read many of the other Chrestomanci books, you might see it coming. The plot I give here is mostly given away in the first few pages, so I promise I'm not being too heavy-handed on spoilers.

I always thoroughly enjoy Jones's Chrestomanci books, and this one was no exception. I picked it up yesterday for a car book (something to read if I end up stuck in the car) and ended up rereading the whole thing.
It's not my favorite in the series by a long shot, but I flat out love Christopher Chant and Millie, and will gobble up anything involving them. I'm not gonna lie - if Jones ever decides to write the story of how they realized that they were in love, I'll be over the moon wi...more

Another 3.5 star...
I stumbled into this series when I was drawn to this book at the library. I enjoyed it quite a bit - classic YA fantasy. Seeing that the Chrestomanci books were published out of order, I felt ok starting here. I liked it well enough to search out the other books in the series...eventually. But it didn't blow me away. I want to read more Diana Wynne Jones, though. I like her ideas and the tone was good.

While this was my commuting audiobook, I often found myself sitting in the driveway with the car turned off but the CD player still going - the audio equivalent of "just one more page!" In this book from the Chrestomanci "series", Jones pulls out yet another fascinating way for a magical world to work. We also get another look at the young Christopher Chant, through the eyes of the ill-fated (or is he?) Conrad.

I thought this one was alright, but the series promised more at the beginning and the end (which I read first through no fault of my own). My son said he read them a long time ago and thought they were strange and hard to understand. This from a kid doing a report on the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. I guess we all have our own opinions.

A fast read, of course. Not quite as fulfilling as the other Christopher Chant books. The twist(s) were a little convoluted. But I liked getting the story between Charmed Life and The Lives of Christopher Chant filled in a bit. Why are her big bads always ladies? I think she has such a great way of telling the story from the point of view of a child--where the mere fact of being a child makes certain aspects of the story incomprehensible, till later (kind of like The Mysterious Incident of ...more

Children's fantasy with characters that can perform magic in an alternate universes setting. She wrote "Howl's moving castle" which is one of my favorite books. It had been made into an anime, which wasn't really as good as the book. This one isn't her best; part of the "Chrestomanci" series.

I like the older Chrestomanci, but 15-year old Christopher Chant is also an interesting character... so full of himself, and here he got involved in another magical adventure, seen from the eyes of Conrad, a boy with a very bad karma to live through before the end of the year.

(6/8/09) Always wonderful.
(9/5/09) This is definitely one of her best books. It does require having read earlier books, to make sense of Chrestomanci's appearance, but otherwise is clearly described and well-timed. (In other words, I love this book like whoa.)

It is somewhere in the Chrestomanci Series I have no clue where. If you know please tell me so I can read them in order.) Fun to keep up with. I liked the ending. I just like Diana Wynne Jone's books in general. Like Howl's moving Castle.

Yet another story with the amazing Christopher Chant, although is isn't the main character. Conrad heads up to the castle for work and discovers many amazing secrets, and sets some things straight with the help of Christopher Chant.
