Straight adventure novel, no science fiction. Easily one of Verne's better books, this is an underappreciated gem. Nadya, the 'damsel in distress' is a strong female character. The stalwart Michael must deliver a message from the czar to the governor of Siberia, about treachery afoot. He journeys through hostile Central Asian territory and is tortured. This is what we used to call strictly a "boy's book" and now, would be considered a Young Adult novel. I read this many, many years ago, but the...more

A nice straightforward adventure novel, as Michael on a mission for the Czar has to basically travel from one end of Russia to the other before a traitor can give the enemy armies vital information.

Michael is stoic to the point of having one facial expression, but he is determined, manly and good to his mother. His love interest is treated as a bit of a damsel, but proves to be every bit as tough as her boyfriend.

What keeps this book from sinking under it's own weight is the two bickering report...more

Being a fan of Jules Verne, of course I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It definitely wasn't the science fiction genre adventure such as 20,000 Leagues or Journey to the Centre of the Earth, but this was more one of pure adventure, determination, daring, one of those more true to life tales that you just must keep reading since you are constantly left wondering what will happen next.

I'll recommend 'Michael Strogoff' to all Verne fans or anyone just looking for an old fashion adventure...

Enjoy the...more

MICHAEL STROGOFF, or, the Courier of the Czar. (1876). Jules Verne. ***
Jules Verne (1828-1905) wrote a lot more than science fiction, as we now call the genre that he co-invented with H. G. Wells. This novel was an example of his forays into the world of the action/adventure story. It’s a tale of a mission undertaken by its hero to reach an outlying post in Siberia and deliver from the Czar of the Russias. When the telegraph line is cut between Moscow and Irkutz, the Czar looks for another way...more

Michel Strogoff ist...more

This is one of the better Verne novels I have read in my current reading of a lot of lessser Verne. It has no sf element, being a straight adventure movel. The hero is a courier sent by the czar (by implication, Alexander II --his more generous policies to Siberian exiles are stressed) to his brother Grand Duke Sergius in Irkutsk during a revolt of
Islamic Central Asia led by the emir of Bokhara and a Russian traitor named Ivan Ogareff. (The Muslim forces seem
much more dangerous than they actuall...more

Who knew that Jules Verne also wrote historical fiction?!? I just found this out when I stumbled over this fabulous book. If you are a Jules Verne fan then you will enjoy this character driven book that gives lots of information on the cultures of people living in Russia during the time of the Tzars.--Judy

Besides Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days, Michael Strogoff is one of my favorites. Might be slow starting out, but pretty soon you start reading the twists and turns, and before you know it you are caught up into the book! Well worth the effort to read!!!!!

This book was the most influential book during my childhood - I remember hot Summers when I did not want to play outside, watch TV or do anything else but to know what would the next page would bring. This book is a gem, especially for young readers.

Michael Strogoff a courier in the Czar's service,is sent as an secret agent to Siberia. He will deliver a vital message to the Emperor's brother. Hopefully the letter will prevent a rebellion from spreading in that province.Along the road he encounters two suspicious journalists (French and British of course). These battling friends are always trying to sabotage each others reports.More enjoyably a young lady in distress appears. Neither cold or heat or mountains or rivers, not to mention the rebe...more

I really like the story. After read this book, we can see a romantic side of Jules Verne. Not like other JV's story, it tell us about an adventure that full of dangerous but had a romantic story within.

Michael Strogoff is a courier for the czar Alexander II of Russia. When the Tatar king Feofar Khan invades Russia, Strogoff is sent to Irkutsk to warn the governor, who is the brother of the czar. during the journey, Michael strogoff met some people like war reporter, and a pretty woman Named Nad...more

Wanted to read this ever since I found out about it... which wasn't easy to do, actually. Found it for $2.50! And the hero looks like Gregory Peck on the cover!

This is a reread of one of my most beloved books ever. Definitely my favourite villain, Ivan Ogareff and a very heroic hero Michel Strogoff who with the help of a courageous and loyal young woman beats all the odds and defeats the villain and his evil master plan. There are some race fails, Nadia is only 16 years old (something I had forgotten) and the omniscient narrator is a bit annoying when he goes into his travel guide mode. Still, I loved every page of it, I smiled at the dynamic duo of jo...more

One of my favourite childhood books and still reads very well. Verne's best novel. Pity there hasn't been an English translation for a while.

Jules Gabriel Verne was a French author who pioneered the genre of science-fiction. He is best known for his novels "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1864), "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870), and "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1873).

Verne wrote about space, air, and underwater travel before navigable aircraft and practical submarines were invented, and before any means of spa...more
