Here on Earth is still my favorite Alice Hoffman novel. With Hoffman, it's pretty much hit-or-miss but I never hesitate to pick up her books because of her lovely prose. She writes metaphors so well and is able to make the most squalid things seem magical.

This story opens with a selfish little girl who lays a curse on her mother and is forever tortured when her mother dies soon after. She then lives a half-life as a librarian preoccupied with death and fairytales. One day, she wishes hersel...more

The Ice Queen begins with warning the reader to "Be Careful what you wish for." As a child, the protagonist wishes in an angry whim that she never see her mother again; promptly, her mother is killed in a car accident. Later in life, she mockingly wishes to be struck by lightning--another wish granted. Throughout the book, she is fascinated with both death and fairytales, two elements which weave in and out of the fabric of the novel in beautiful forms. The way lightning transforms its...more

This is by far the best book by Hoffman that I've read to date. Told in first person, the point of view doesn't change, making it easy to read but also engrossing as your able to get into the mind of the main character.

As a young girl, the narrator wished for her mother to disappear. When the wish came true, her life begin to follow a pattern, one of wishes fulfilled no matter how strange or disasterous. As an adult, she wishes to be struck by lightening, and when this wish comes true, her ...more

The second half of this book is decent, which saved me from having to set the whole thing on fire. It's hard to believe that this was published in 2006 as Alice Hoffman's trillionth novel, and not one of her first. It's like something a vaguely talented teenager might write. The metaphors are obvious and overused: lightning, ice, fire, butterflies, the color red. I rolled my eyes a lot. I didn't quite understand why the narrator supposedly had "ice running through her veins" (eye r...more

I can tell you right off the bat that this isn't the kind of book I'm used to reading. However, I truly did like it. I had a hard time trying to get through the beginning, mainly because of the character's despression and frame of mind. I've seen depression first-hand (my best friend) and know what it can do to a person and the people around them. And it's not what that person does to come out of her shell, but the people around you. Just like this character. I honestly believe that had she not ...more

This is the first book by Hoffman that I have read in a while. I really liked Practical Magic, but most of the other books that I have read by her have all of blended together in my mind. They weren't bad but they weren't memorable and I had sort of given up on her.

This book, however, really stands out. It's not your typical Hoffman, it's darker and the magical element is perhaps less obvious at first.

The narrator is a librarian who was orphaned at the age of eight. She blames herself f...more

Alice Hoffman is one of my favorite authors. If you don't really care for her writing style, you will probably not like this book. But for anyone who does like Hoffman, in my opinion, although it is not one of her best, it is definitely worth reading. Personally, I felt I would have been better off to read it all in one sitting, so as not to break the "mood", or at least in a less fragmented way than I did wind up reading it, which was a little bit here and a little bit there. I wo...more

If I could, I'd give this a firm 3 & 1/2 stars because I'm not sure I loved it but I more than liked it. I like/love most of her books. I like fairy tales and this book was full of fairy tale references - the story itself is really a fairy tale. It is short and it is a quick read. I had great trouble warming to most of the main characters but this was meant to be. The last pages made me cry because, in the end, I really felt for those same characters. Any book that elicits tears deserve...more

Beautifully written in parts (mainly the first page of each chapter), but as a whole it was a bit contrived--- and boring. I’ll admit, it’s not generally the type of book I would read, but I found it on the bargain rack and decided to give it a go. I found the prose, for the most part, very bland. I could never place my finger on why the start of each chapter was so wonderful and then it just sort of fell apart. I think that overall there was too much telling and not enough showing, which ...more

I really like Alice Hoffman. Was this as good as "Practical Magic"? No. But it is equally worth a look, especially if you have enjoyed her other works. I really liked how her characters seem to view themselves in a very lonely world. In the case of this book, the narrator is surrounded by people, but unable to give herself to them even momentarily. She punishes herself for things that happened in the past, believing wishes are real and everything that happens is the result of one illfa...more

This book was a typical, magical Hoffman novel. It was a story about a woman who felt nothing, for anyone or anything, practically. She walked through the aspects of her life (e.g., work, sex) mechanically and paid little attention to what was going on around her--until everything changed when she was struck by lightning. This freak event not only electrified her body, but also her mind and overall outlook on life, sending her on an uncharted journey that she would have never thought possible. ...more

O.K. I know not a lot of Alice Hoffman fans out there didn't like this book, but I loved it! I had taken it out of the library before and, not realizing that I had already read it and found myself re-reading it and loving it all over, again. I thought there was a lot of symbolism here and I really enjoyed thinking about all the different kinds of love - love for a parent, love for a sib, love for a lover, love for a spouse and even love of self. I thought it was amazing, how Ms. Hoffman brought ...more

I could not believe that Alice Hoffman wrote this book - it was graceless, dark, and depressing -- and just plain weird. The main character was one-dimensional and the plot was deadly boring. There was way too much strange stuff going on that does not deserve to be called "magic realism", for which she is famous. And it rambled on and on......

I have been a fan of this author's since forever, it seems, and read every book of hers. I have not loved every one, but none have disappointe...more

Alice Hoffman does the South! Very cool book, loaded with the sort of vivid imagery you expect from Hoffman: she gives you so much texture and uses her words so well that you FEEL the texture of an orange even as you taste it with her characters.

This book is a bit different from most of her work in that it is in first person and it takes place for the most part outside of the Northeast. It contains one of the most beautiful death scenes I've ever seen. Just lovely.

Probably will be ad...more

This isn’t the type of book I would normally enjoy. The narrator/main character is rather depressing, and I spent a good part of the book wanting to slap her and yell "get a grip, would ya?". However, her initial state just makes her transformation more compelling. And if you ask me, the key to it isn’t Lazarus Jones — it’s her sister-in-law. Lazarus, despite his interesting story, is just another repeat in the pattern of her life.

In my opinion, this book is worth the read ...more

Quite enjoyed this book- it's packed with description and is very emotionally charged. The life of a woman who has been "frozen" since the day her mother died changes gradually, starting with the day she is struck by lightning. After this pivotal catastrophe, she is drawn to a fellow survivor whose touch burns and who literally breathes fire.
I really wasn't sure that I was going to like this one until the very end- Alice Hoffman springs things on you very subtly and I had no fait...more

I am an Alice Hoffman fanatic... something about her I absolutely love love love. I don't have very many authors I feel this way about... so she may not work for you. I started with Turtle Moon years ago, Practical Magic... and all her books. I got a little bogged down a few years ago when she was going through the breast cancer period (many relatives and friends and characters all had it). But she's back! The Ice Queen is fabulous. It made me cry, in a good way, because it's one of those perfec...more

Well, I picked this up today after buying it on a whim at Barnes and Noble (I can't resist a $6 hardback!). I started reading and did not stop until the last page. I didn't even use the bookmark I had ready for when I took a break!

I don't always like Alice Hoffman's books, as they can be very bleak. Like much of her writing, this book is very emotional and a little mystical (not magical like some of her books).

If you don't like Alice Hoffman's stuff in general, you will not like thi...more

Alice Hoffman is like olives to me. I don't really like her yet I always think I should. So, every few years I give her another try...if only to confirm that, "yup, I still don't like her."

Nothing personal, Alice, I don't think I appreciate the whole magical realism genre.

The one thing I can say about this book is that it made me curious about real-life lightening strike victims. And if any of the crazy aftermath symptoms that Alice described are true. I may even do a little re...more
