So, today at the Supermarket it was ‘Room on the Broom – LOOK!’ followed by ‘Pleeeaaase’, which, as it was on offer, I couldn’t refuse! I’d barely got the milk in the fridge before we flopped on the sofa with great excitement to read Joshua’s newest addition to his collection!
As you might imagine, this is another truly wonderful story. ‘Room on the Broom’ is told in delightful poetry, has great humour and the witch is very friendly and likeable. This is perfec...more

Room on the Broom By Julia Donaldson
This is a catchy story with repetition. A witch goes on a journey losing things along the way, when she gets off her broom to find the items she picks up another traveller along the way. By the end of her journey she has a cat, frog, bird and a dog. On her final destination her broomstick snaps and to her fright she meets a dragon, which wants ‘witch and chips for his tea’. Not to worry her friends that she picked up along the way come to her rescue. Read more...more

A kind old witch with a purry cat loses her hat, her bow and her wand to the wind. As they both go in search of these items, various different animals find them first – a dog with brown spots, a very green bird and an extremely fastidious frog - all of whom want to know if there is room on the broom for an animal like them. The amiable, though far from stereotypical, witch smiles and makes room for them one by one, until the broom bends beneath their weight. Things begin to look bleak as the bro...more
I read this book "Room on the Broom" to my year 1 class during SBT1.I read it the week before Halloween so the kids were engaged with the theme. It is definitely to suitable to read to a year one class, but not suitable for them to read independently. As a whole class story it read very well, rhyme is prevalent throughout the book and all the children noticed this and so they could predict some of the endings. Th story is about a witch who is travelling on a broom and how she picks up different...more

Julia Donaldson and Alex Scheffler previously brought us The Gruffalo amongst other books. If you liked any of those then you'll like this one too.
The story follows a witch as she flies on her broom, but every once in a while she'll drop something and an animal will find it and want to ride on her broom (which has room). Eventually it breaks and she is confronted by a dragon but thanks to her chums she gets out of that sticky situation.
The story of course is told in the trademark rhyme that Dona...more

The book ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson is a fantastic rhyming story. The story is about a witch who has an eventful journey on her broomstick. This is another great picture book by Julia Donaldson and Alex Scheffler. This is the story of a good-hearted witch and her happy cat that fly off together through the air on her broom stick, without a care in the world – that is until the wind blows off the witch’s hat and their adventure really begins.
When they fly down to get the hat back, a friendly dog brings it back to them and asks if there is room on the broom for him and the good witch agrees and the friendly dog joins them on their tr...more

‘Room on the Broom’ is a children’s book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Alex Sheffler about a witch who, with the help of friends old and new, manages to escape being eaten by a fire breathing dragon. The message of the story promotes the importance of being helpful to others, and the benefits all can receive from doing so. The book is written in rhyme which really engages the reader, and the repetition the book adopts also allows any audience or individual that may be having the...more

Room on the broom by Julia Donaldson
Key stage one children adore this classic Julia Donaldson picture book and there are numerous reasons why this is the case. I personally like the fast paced nature of the book which makes it fun, interesting and easy to read. Children adore the repetitive nature of the witch losing her belongings and particularly the line “the witch tapped on the broomstick and whoosh! They were gone.”
The storyline itself is based upon the travels of a witch who begins her...more

Julia Donadson and Axel Scheffler come together yet again to deliver another childrens' favourite. The witch loses her hat and when it is returned by the dog he asks to join her on her broom. She then loses her bow and this is returned by a bird who also asks to join her on her broom and finally her wand, which is returned by a frog who also asks to join her on her broom. This is a great book accompanied by beautiful vibrant illustrations to support the text. We generally associate witches as being wicked and evil but the one in this story is pleasant and very good natured. The witch goes for a ride on her broomstick with her cat. She flies over forests and mountains until a storm blows away her hat, her bow and her wand. These are retrieved by a dog, a bird and a frog. Each of them wish to ride on the broomstick and the big-hearted witch lets them. However, with...more

A story to tickle every child's fantasy
I was lent this book by an acquaintance and, having already read the Gruffalo and enjoyed that, I was looking forward to reading this one as well. I was not disappointed. In fact, the story appealed to me even more, if that's possible, than the Gruffalo. I liked the idea of a friendly witch who meets new friends on her journey to recover her hat, bow and wand and how, by working together, these friends overcome a greedy, red dragon. Personally, I think ther...more

Room on the Broom tells the story of a good natured Witch and her cat travelling on her broomstick and meeting different characters throughout. I told this story to my four year old daughter and my initial impression was that the book had large detailed pictures and was written in large bold font. They pick up and befriend a dog, a bird and a frog along their journey and they all ride along on the Witches broom. The broom eventually snaps in two and all the characters fall to the ground. The Wit...more
I read this book and listened to it on CD. This is my picture book in poetic form. A witch and her cat are flying through the sky on her broomstick when her hat blows off of her head and falls to the ground. A helpful animal finds her hat and wants a ride on her broom in return. The witch and cat invite him on the broom. As they are flying through the sky her bow falls to the ground, then her wand falls to the ground. Two more animals find the objects that belong to the witch and want a ride on...more
This fabulous book by Julia Donaldson details the journey of a witch flying through the air on her broom, loosing her possessions and gaining passengers as she goes.
The poetic nature of the book sets the reading at a delightful pace which I believe would be very engaging for children. The rhyme and repetition would provide endless possibilities for child participation and the vocabulary used would provide an opportunity for discussion and expansion of the children's word bank.

The legendary author-illustrator duo Julia Donaldson and Alex Scheffler collaborate together once again to produce 'Room on the Broom'. Another enchanting rhyme book which mesmerises readers from the onset as a friendly witch and her cat embark on a windy adventure on her broom. Along the way she loses some valuable items and befriends a helpful dog, bird and a frog who all accompany her for a ride. However, the broom can only withstand so much weight, and as they all fly through the mountains,...more

This is a good book to show children it does not matter who you are or what you are, you can all be friends. This book is about a witch and keeps dropping things whilst flying on her broom, and she keeps meeting other animals and takes them all on her broom. It is repeatative and aimed at 3-5 years. The pictures are easy to follow for small children to understand the story.
This is a really fun story I used for my Year 1 class on my last placement. It tells the tale of a friendly witch who, on her travels, looses her possessions. With the help of many animal friends she begins a quest to reclaim them all. This book also comes with an interactive CD that can be displayed on the IWB, with cartoon clips from the story and read by Julia Donaldson (which the children loved). This book is great for introducing vocabulary and after a few reads, the children began to join...more
