After reading the first book in this series, I was happy to also have #2 on hand, so I could quickly start with this book. Like #1, I enjoyed the parts other than the romance between the main characters. I liked reading about the other people in town, their problems, and the like, since I felt the relationship between Maddy and Jeb to be a bit contrived. I really hated the character of Jeb's sister (at first) because she was just so annoying with trying to fix up her brother. Some people just ne...more
The second book in Macomber's Dakota series centers on Maddie Washburn, Lindsay's best friend from childhood. Leaving a stressful job in Savannah, GA as a social worker, Maddie purchases the local grocery in Buffalo Valley and is ready for a fresh start. She is quickly intrigued by Jeb McKenna, a local recluse who lost his leg in a farming accident years earlier. After a blizzard strands Maddie and Jeb for a few days, their relationship takes on a new level.

I didn't hate this book. But, it definitely wasn't the best I've ever read. Maddy and Jeb are likable characters, but they might be the only ones for me. I personally thought there were too many side stories going on and a real lack of depth to the main story. The other characters and their stories were simply annoying. I hated Sarah and her bratty little daughter. But I suppose it can be seen as a good thing if an author has the talent to make you hate with passion. Overall, it wasn't terrible,...more
I've never read any Debbie Macomber, and I liked this book well enough. I picked it up at a book fair. It's the second book in the series (I of course haven't read the first) but there wasn't much trouble following it.
One complaint that I did have was I thought that she had too many storylines going on at once. Most romance novels, even series, only have two or three storylines going on at once. This book had at least six, and maybe more.

In the first novel of the Dakota series, numerous townspeople were introduced and explored, but the story mainly focused on Gage and Lindsay. In this, the second novel of the series, the sagas of Buffalo Bob, Merrily, Jeb, Maddy, Sarah, and Dennis are continued and become more complicated. And let's not forget Calla, nasty and belligerent as ever, but life isn't so rosy with her "wonderful" dad.
I cannot wait to see what the residents of Buffalo Valley are up to. It was good to see what developed in this storyline although I felt a bit shortchanged with Maddy. One problem I have with Debbie Macomber, is when she writes about a small town with multiple storylines she often shortchanges the characters the novel is supposed to focus on as the series progresses.
Now that Lindsay is settled, her best friend Maddy comes to town to rescue the local grocery store. During a winter storm, Maddy meets a man who will forever change the way she feels about Buffalo Valley.
This may have been my favorite of the series.

I thought it was just okay. I would say it's probably more realistic than a lot of romances, but it was also kind of depressing.
It's about a town that is failing and the stories of stores closing and farms failing really got to me. It does have a happy ending (it's romance, after all!) but it wasn't all that fun of a ride.
I bought the whole trilogy in a book sale, so I'll read the rest, but if I didn't already have them, I probably wouldn't.
