From Russia with Love's a cliffhanger, Bond's status unknown. Poisoned by SMERSH agent Rosa Klebb, he collapsed at its end. In Dr No, M learns from the firm's neurologist that the poison was tetrodotoxin, obtained from the genetalia of the Japanese fish fugu. It paralyses muscles. Victims are conscious until asphyxiated. Bond is given first aid by his friend Rene Mathis, while a doctor is summoned. The Doctor had spent time in S. America & had dealt with various poisons. He diagnoses curare poisoning & treats Bond accordingly. Survival is unlikely.
Bond survives. M sends him on a rest cure to Jamaica to investigate the disappearance of Strangways, the head of Station J in Kingston, who'd appeared in Live & Let Die. He learns Strangways had been investigating Dr Julius No, a reclusive Chinese-German living on Crab Key Is., said to be a dragon's lair. He's aware his hotel room has been searched. A centipede is put in his bed while he sleeps.
With help of Quarrel, an old friend previously in Live & Let Die, & the beautiful Honeychile Rider, who visits the island to collect valuable shells, Bond discovers that No, ostensibly operating a business harvesting guano, is working for the USSR. No has lost his hands to amputation by a rival criminal group intent on leaving a message against stealing. Shot thru the chest, he survived due to having his heart on the right, but was left with artificial hands & a mean disposition. The Russians have supplied the claw-handed No with several million dollars' worth of equipment to sabotage US missile tests. No captures Bond & Honey. Quarrel is incinerated by the dragon, a flamethrower-equipped armored swamp buggy to scare trespassers.
No tortures Bond to discover his powers of endurance. He's forced to run an air duct obstacle course, suffers burns & spider attacks. The ordeal ends in a fight against a giant squid, which he defeats thru his ingenuity at improvised objects made into weapons, as well as physical toughness. Escaping, he rescues Honey from her own ordeal of being pegged out to be eaten by crabs. He finally kills No by commandeering a loading machine at the docks & diverting its guano flow to bury the villain alive. They then escape the complex in the dragon buggy.
