This book enters into a tough, tough, tough analytical and theoretical task: aligning Elvis Costello and Thatcherism without reverting to reification or simplistic representational politics.

It is an attempt to create a matrix of scholarship between cultural studies and history. It is not entirely successful, but it is important for popular music scholars to acknowledge this effort.
