Crue fans and people who like the dirt
I’m not a huge Crue fan. Their first two LPs spent a fair amount of time on my teenage turntable but, by the time Theater Of Pain pranced and prissed its way into release, I had lost interest. I do like some Crue songs enough to get stoked when I hear them, even later compositions like “All In The Name Of…”, “Kickstart My Heart” or “Wild Side”. Their ballads stand out of the 80’s hair metal miasma as being of a certain quality. “Nona” and “Without You” are just t...more

The Dirt is a semi-autobiography of the 80’s band Motley Crue. It’s a GREAT read that is memorizing. All four band members write about their childhood, the crazy period where they become the most famous band in America and then the post-fame period where they turn to drugs and hot chicks.
The middle section of the book is how the Crue got from a great live act to becoming a the biggest band in the world. They were constantly selling out shows on the LA Strip but none of the record labels w...more

I used to think that I could not be shocked by tales of celebrity shenanigans. Well, I was wrong. After a few recommendations I read The Dirt, the story of Motley Crue. For most of their career, the behavior of these people (Mick Mars excepted) is flat out appalling. As Nikki Sixx notes, if they were not famous they would have been in jail. I'm pretty sure that if you saw any of these people in their heyday, you would hate them immediately.

This book is kick ass! Seriously, from the very beginning it's totally disgusting, shocking, debaucherous (not a word, but, ah well), and absolutely impossible to put down! The chapters are all written individually from each Crue member's perspective, so, the reader ends up getting different sides of the stories, which is awesome. And the stories are just as crazy and over the top as you could imagine! There are even a few chapters written by other people who were connected to them/mentioned...more

I ripped through "The Dirt" while suffering from a nasty bout of the flu. Because of its accessibility, its fast pace and its sporadic-yet-easy-to-track narrative (which simply switches between points of view), I finished it in about a day and a half.
I will admit to never having been a huge fan of Motley Crue, or hair metal in general. I could take or leave Warrant, Poison, Ratt, et cetera. I originally picked this book up because I had heard that its storytelling was both disg...more

It is apparent that the members of Motley Crue do not like each other...even after all these years.
This book chronicles the rise, fall, and eventual reunion of the band. Of course, drugs, alcohol, and extramarital activities are peppered throughout. Each member of the band (as well as managers, record execs, and others) take turns writing chapters back and forth. This makes for interesting reading, as many chapters are responses (or rebuttles) to others. Sometimes it feels like an ongoing IM...more

i remember when i was 13 or so and i finally realized that all of the r.l. stine books i'd been reading were pretty trashy and devoid of any literary merit. i felt a little silly for devouring something like 100 fear street books. i didn't feel too bad about it, though. i mean, i was reading, and it wasn't like i ONLY read fear street books. i read good stuff too.

High atop my list of "guilty pleasures" (sandwiched somewhere in between "Valley of the Dolls" and airplane food) is Motley Crue. They're ugly as hell, crude, and their music is of dubious artistic merit.
And yet I was first in line to buy this "autobiography," helped along considerably by Neil Strauss (I somehow doubt that Vince Neil would drop the word "nacreous" in his everyday conversation). It's a fascinating read. We learn that Vince Neil is an...more

11am. Woke up. Vomited. Started reading this book.
4pm. Neck started hurting. Took huge amounts of cocaine, bottle of Alleve, 5th of Jack, decided reading in bed wasn't the best thing for my posture.
4:15pm. Went crazy, destroyed hotel room, terrified groupies in varying stages of dress, played rock show.
6pm. Was woken up, informed previous rock show was in head by manager, told had to go to real rock show later. Read more book.
8pm. Arrived @ show. Drank 2 more bottles of Jack, ...more

Like a much more in-depth version of the one of the best episodes of Behind the Music ever.
This book definitely reminded me how much I miss playing in bands, and how many bullets I dodged by leaving Hollywood. But mostly, it just brought back sweet sweet memories of living in a fucked-up cesspool of a house, partying every night TR style, and the joys of travelling in an invincible gang of snotty young miscreants.

Anyone who loves rock and/or tell-alls
I really never expected to like this book so much. I know Motley Crue from their hits only, and personally only that they were all screwed up.
But their story was like a constant Greek tragedy. Nikki Sixx might just be the most messed up musician ever. The man OD'd, died, was saved, broke out of the hospital, hitched a ride with two fans who thought he was a ghost or something, promised them he would never do drugs again... then went home and shot up again! And that's one of about 10 stories ...more

Unfreakingbelieveable! Not only is it amazing these maniacs are alive, but that they are capable of any coherent thought at all is truly a miracle. Loved this book! Written exactly as these guys speak, it's like they're telling you the stories. My favorite part is that because it is written from all four band members' viewpoints, you get four different perspectives on many of the same stories. It becomes pretty clear who was out of their head and who had some semblance of reality. Warning:...more

Best time I ever had reading about rock n roll. Unlike many alleged 'tell all' books, this one really does seem to tell it all. The stories that didn't make it in must be mind blowingly horrible!
Love the way the different chapters capture the voices of the band members. Especially the Tommy Lee chapters. Loved it when he was talking about being in jail after hitting Pamela Anderson. It went something like this: Dude. It was all bad. All Baaaaaad.

First off, Tommy Lee is not the author of this book. The writer does a brilliant job of presenting each chapter in a diffferent "voice" from each of the 4 band members in Motley Crue. It's actually an incredible feat, and he pulls it off.
This is the ultimate book about the debauchery of the rock n' roll lifestyle. It's about stupidity, drugs, sex, and pretty much God's revenge on these four assholes (okay, really there are only three assholes, because the bass player seems like suc...more

My brother is the huge Motley Crue fan, I sort of grew out of them by the age of 10, but that did not take away from my enjoyment of this book. This book has everything: hookers, piles of coke, firearms, overdoses, shooting Jack Daniels intraveniously, homemade porn, destroying hotels, etc.
My favorite story is Nikki Sixx throwing a bottle of whiskey throw a window on a Japanese bullet train while it was in motion and the ensuing arrest. He then decided to just take off, no matter that he had no...more

If you want to read about sex, drugs and rock and roll, this is your book. Characters are told by each of the four members, which makes for an interesting structure since the book jumps around time-wise. I found that a bit confusing. The boys lived through some pretty weird and disgusting times. There are some crazy stories in here- people dying in accidents, broken marriages and late night debauchery.
There is a heart to this book, and it is an interesting exploration. I was really disturbed ...more

I read this tell-all book about the rise and fall of the eighties hair band Motley Crue quickly (which is usually a sign that I like what I'm reading), but with my eyebrows perpetually raised. When I finished, I felt the way I do after I read a gossip magazine, which is to say kind of icky. I found the band's treatment of women, which teetered between being disrespectful, disturbing, and downright abusive, to be pretty offensive. I was also disgusted by their indulgently destructive behavior,...more

Okay, so I have a thing for trashy memoirs. I wasn't even a Motley Crue fan. But after seeing "100 Most Metal Moments" a couple dozen times on VH1, then a Nikki Sixx bio on Fuse or some channel like that, I had to go to B&N and pick this up.
Get over yourself, no one reads the "important" stuff all the time! Besides, who's to say what's important? I'll bet "The Dirt" is important to someone out there in Western Pennsylvania or someplace like that.

How on earth are these dudes STILL ALIVE!? Sweet baby jeebus! Let's face it - we've all fantasized about being in Motley Crue. Money, crazy debauchery, booze, women...more money, more crazy debauchery, more booze, more women...*sigh* a girl can dream, can't she? Vince Neil killing someone in a drunk driving accident, Nikki Sixx dying two or three times and coming back to life, and Tommy Lee writing awful poetry are really just a sliver of what this book has to offer. You may have to sacrific...more

One of the BEST BOOKS I've ever read. I don't even like rock and roll, but I ate this up!!
"Party like a rockstar" is given a whole new meaning once you read this. Motley Crue lived quite the debaucherous lifestle, and the author brilliantly captured each band member's "voice" throughout each chapter with his choice on how to compile the anecdotes. I even found myself really rooting for these guys throughout their life tribulations, and at the end of the book, I ended up l...more
