This is Calvin at some of his polemical best: to the modern ear that prefers peace even at the cost of truth, it might sound like a harsh response to Trent; but considering the rhetoric of the day, it is quite an excellent and appropriate response to the rather pompous canon set out by the Council.

This is highly recommended for learning more about the issues Rome had with the Protestants, and what one of the most remarkably gifted Protestants had to say in response. In comparison with Calvin's b
