Getting ready for my trip in a couple of weeks to London, I put a couple of guidebooks on hold from the library. The most pleasant surprise was this slim book by Anna Quindlen. She perfectly captures the allure of a city that you have read about in countless books; how it feels familiar and still new. A gorgeous writer, this book manages to be bother personal and yet sort of elusively informative. London was a city that never disappointed the author, and as she talks about some of the literar...more

I started reading this book back in 2005 during a Harry Potter release party at my local book store. (Which should tell you how exciting the release party was, but I digress.) I wasn't able to find it again until last week, when the same store had it on the bargain book shelf for $3.
Like the author, my view of London has been shaped by the numerous books I've read that take place there. Unlike the author, I haven't yet been able to see if my "imagined London" is as good as the rea...more

This book is probably more fun to read if you've never been to London. Having been there myself and having read most of the books Quindlen mentions in her book, it felt like a continual anti-climax. Her organization is scattered and left me wondering where I was headed next--not in any logical place.

Warning: this is not a travel guide. A memior, yes. Travel guide, no. If you read it knowing this from the start you won't be disappointed. It is, after all, a delightful little jaunt through Quindlen's memories of her misadventures and discoveries of her favorite city's literary haunts. A light read, it will inspire your own travel plans or, at the very least, amuse you for a few hours on a summer's day.

My expectation was cityscapes based on a composite of literature. What I got was tons and tons of literature references and details, which probably makes more sense, so I can't fault the book that much. If you love British literature, pick this book up for sure. If you're looking for page after page of foggy cobblestone paths and horse-drawn carriages and quaint little pubs in alleys, this really might not be your book.

When I read this book I felt as if Quindlen and I might have been separated at birth, so similar were our feelings about our first visits to London, and our expectations when we went in search of our long-loved literary landmarks. I did wish that there were a bit more to the book--but I did enjoy what there was of it.

I'm afraid this didn't quite live up to my expectations, which admittedly were high. There were some interesting historical bits in it, but it didn't feel like the "tour" promised in the title - more like a travel memoir, which wasn't quite what I was looking for.

Fun-I loved thinking about London at this time of the year-The weather matches up! I also obviously need to read more books set in London. Although I am sort of tired of Dickens-

This book has a special place in my heart because for so many years I *did* only imagine London. The reality did not tarnish the dream! A lovely book.

I have not ready any of Quindlen's fiction, but I enjoyed reading this book and sharing her passion for reading as well as writing.

It's the tale of three cities: the fictional London; the historical metropolis; and today's vibrant capital. Oh, how I love London.

Very quick read. Covered the locations of well known authors and books, such as Dickens and Virginia Woolfe
