This is a story about a girl who has a wild idea about bringing an old world kind of celebration to New York. It so happens that her dad works for Macy's and she tells the story to Mr. Macy and thus the Macy's parade is born. It's kind of a nice story and the pictures are sort of cool, but if you read ""Balloons Over Broadway" which I totally loved, this one feels fake and patronizing. Balloons over Broadway is really about the puppeteer who invented Macy's balloons but part of the story is abou...more

A fictionalized account of how the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade came to be a tradition. Milly, the daughter of immigrants notices all the things her father and his friends miss about holiday celebrations from "home". She encourages Mr. Macy to provide a way for them to celebrate with marching, music, and costumes that they love. I loved the wrap up where she points out what elements of the story are fictionalized and a deeper history into the story of the Macy's Parade. Would be a great book to...more

Really I want to give this book 2.5 because I hate that it's a made up story about how the Macy's day parade really began, with dear old Mr. Macy as a delightful old fellow who just loved to make his immigrant employees feel less lonely around the holidays. But the illustrations are pretty good and the writing's just fine. I think it would have been more interesting to read about the original 1000+ Macy's employees marking in the first parade.

A charmingly told story about a little girl who encourages Mr. Macy to start the Macy's parade to help all the immigrants at his store feel part of an American holiday. Now, when I got to the author's note, I was a bit miffed because this "based on a true story" is only very loosely so as Millie is made-up and apparently Mr. Macy had already passed away by the time the Macy's parade was introduced. So, it should be read more as just a nice story about different cultures coming together to celebr...more

Excited to share this one tomorrow with two classes. Going to open with a couple of YouTube videos (in case they haven't ever actually seen the parade), read the book, then have the kids make their own (2D, obviously) parade balloons out of construction paper. Hope it works!

A wonderful book that is part fiction/part truth about the beginning of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. Great piece of history that I knew nothing about but enjoy every year before I eat my turkey! Illustrations are by Bret Helquist! Great story!

Such a cute picture book! I read it at school with one of my students. She enjoyed my excitement over the book---I totally agree with Milly, the little girl in the book, Macy's is like a present! :)

Enjoyed this book, perfect partner with Balloons Over Broadway. Also, I love that this book deals with moving, fitting in within a new community, finding your place, fabulous messages!

A cute historical fiction picture book about the Macy's Day Parade. Great pictures and teaching about a certain time period.

Interesting story about immigrants and the partially true story of the birth of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

I wish I'd discovered this book around Christmas time! Still, a charming book with colorful illustrations!

Easily paired with Balloons Over Broadway. Holiday read aloud.

pretty pictures. VERY loosely based on a true story.

This story is a "not so true" tale of how the Macy's Day Parade came to be. I love Shana Corey for strong female characters, her ability to weave a story I can’t put down, while at the same time, keeping it simple enough that even younger children can enjoy.

Unlike Here Come the Girl Scouts, this story contains little fact and alot of fiction. Which doesn’t make it any less fun… just don’t plan on using it as a non-fiction text.
Nancy
A wonderful children's story explaining the history of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, and its multicultural beginnings as a uniquely American tradition.
Jennifer
For reading with my nephew to get him excited on Thanksgiving for the parade. He did not get very excited about this book, but he liked the parade.
