I usually pick up a Harlequin for a bit of brain candy. Usually it's romance lite, and I don't have to think too much. This one was more than that. I really felt for all the poor children went through. The author did a good job of exploring all the family relationships for the most part.

This lost a star for me because the "I love her, but can't tell her" / "I love him, but can't tell him" was a bit annoying towards the end. It bordered on the "big misunderstanding" theme that I really detest in

This was so sweet it was saccharine.
A RCMP woman shoots a guy in a domestic situation.
The widow goes on or continues a bender, leaving the couple's young kids to fend for themselves.
The widow's brother-in-law is a journalist who has often dealt with the cop. There was some mutual attraction.
The cop, despite being suspended pending an inquiry, can't stop watching the kids.
