4% When she had come to Houston, she hadn’t been sure Ben Slocum would help her. But then she saw his face as he looked at his son for the very first time, and she had believed not

Those of us who have read the books in this series know that the heroes and heroines are gritty and plucky people who have taken the challenges of life, some of them quite extraordinary, and have woven them into the warp and woof of their lives. For a Navy SEAL, life is seen through a very specialized set of lenses. These individuals are prepared to deal with just about anything and no matter how challenging. Yet finding out that one has a child about whom they were completely ignorant has to be ...more
Against the Edge is the eighth book in Ms Martin's Raines of Wind Canyon series and as usual I just jumped straight into Against the Edge and I had no problems with jumping in with an already established series as judging by Against the Edge each book has different characters that don't always connect with the previous books other than a mention of other characters and such.

While I liked Against the Edge I had some problems with believing in the romance between the main character's Ben and Clair
I really enjoyed this book, I liked sweet, passionate Claire and strong, protective, but emotionally shut down Ben. It was a total make up for all the other previous, badly done "delinquent" daddy themed books I had read. Neither character was overly foolish and they both seemed believable to me. I loved how as soon as Ben found out about his son, he was all in and ready to track him down and bring him home. I loved how despite how uptight Claire appeared to be she stood on her own and wouldn't ...more

Awesome book by this author! I love the perfect balance of suspense and mystery. The characters are gritty and raw at times. She really did her research on this one, too. Very true to life.
Ms Martin writes superb romantic suspense. This one will keep you on the edge of your seat with her complex storyline and well-drawn characters.
Very good action/romance, except for the ever-stuttering heroine (seems to be a very annoying, insulting feature of Kat Martin h's - oh, but not the H's), and I took off for that.

My only other criticism would be that Ben's ex-fiancee (Sam's mother) supposedly had smex with another guy to run Ben off, so that he would join the military and fill a big desire of his... I just didn't buy that part of the story-line.

Also, I am pretty sure that Ashley's baby in the previous book (the one I read yest
A harlequin romance..with a typical gorgeous rugged hero, mixed in with action and adventure, and of course a reluctant lady. One day a social worker shows up on Ben's doorstep with tales of a son he never met, kidnapped by bubbas and needs rescue.
I enjoyed the story, but the book would build up and up and bam, a climax, but then the story carried on. By the third time, I was feeling like, really another problem, another time to be rescued, really.
But well writteh and nice plot lines. liked. was

Ben Slocum is a very popular lady’s man. He’s good-looking and women are automatically attracted to him, but he’s of the “love ‘em and leave ‘em” variety. Except now he’s in for the shock of his life when a Social Worker, Claire Chastain, shows up at his door and informs him he has a son, Sam. Ben’s in shock and even more so as he can’t figure out why his ex-girlfriend never told him about Sam but he can’t spend too much time right now as he also finds out that Sam has been kidnapped by the ex-b ...more
Ben Slocum is a sexy playboy who loves 'em and leaves him. He lost his heart once and he refuses to go through that hell again. But when Claire Chastain shows up unexpectedly at his front door, the rules of the game change.

Claire explains that he has a son, Sam -- a fact he never knew--and that the little boy has gone missing. She is hoping that Ben can use his expert skills and help her. He is a seasoned ex-military (SEAL) man as well as a PI who is trained for danger.

Eight books into this series and it’s still as strong as ever. Kat Martin has delivered another hot alpha man with great suspenseful story.

Ben’s your typical hard-headed alpha man. He got burnt once in the love department and has sworn off ever falling in love again ever since. He wanted to be a Navy Seal and he successfully was till an injury took him out. He’s now been working as a PI at his best friend Trace Rawlins firm. What he never expected was to come home from one of his night stands a

Against the Edge (The Raines of Wind Canyon, #8)

I have read 4 out of the 8 books in the Raines of Wind Canyon series. This one does not disappoint in drama, suspense, action and likeable characters. It is also steamy. I admit to skipping over the sex scenes. Good plot, lots of different characters.

Claire is a social worker and she wanted to get custody of her friends son Sam after she dies but judge said no. Then Sam disappeared from his foster family home. Who did not report him missing fo
Well, well, well... if you like a good old fashioned rugged Alpha Male then this is a great book to pick up. Ben is an ex-SEAL and a ladies man. He always intended it to stay that way until he meets Claire. Claire is a challenge for Ben... she's tough, hard headed and most of all a connection to a past he thought was behind him for good. Ben has a son and he is missing and Claire is the key to helping him find the son he never knew he had.
There is plenty to keep you turning the pages as Claire
The hot, rugged former navy seal Ben Slocum finds Claire on his doorstop the morning after a hot night. To be told he has a son and that he is missing inspires all kinds of emotion in the man who never wanted to be the type of father he had. The only person he can slake his anger on is Claire. But how can you be mad at someone who wants to help you find your child as desperately as you.

Claire only knows what she has been told about Ben from his ex. He should not make her hot or think about a fut

What an amazing story! I was very hesitant because it was a Harlequin book. I am not a regular Harlequin reader. Well, thanks to Kat Martin that fact has changed, at least with her stories. With a good balance between romance and adventure, Against the Edge was definitely worth taking the time to read.

Ben Slocum is your typical Harlequin hero. Macho, sexy, well-built Ben is tough and doesn't need anyone. At least that’s what he thinks. Enter smart and sexy Claire Chastain and, of course, she nee

Secret discoveries are sometimes miracles in disguise

Ben Slocum is a seasoned PI, was a former Navy SEAL, and right now a well-honed machine able to take a hit and get back up running. When Claire Chastain shows up at his door and tells me that he not only has a son that boy has been kidnapped Ben could have been knocked down by a feather.

Of course at first Ben did not believe it but Claire showed him one picture that closed the door on doubt. Now Ben goes into search and find mode, using every

Lovers of romantic suspense will enjoy Against the Edge, the latest installment of The Raines of Wind Canyon series. Kat Martin always writes about headstrong heroines who have a touch of vulnerability underneath their strong exteriors, and Claire Chastain is no different. Likewise, Ben Slocum mesmerizes as a strong and protective protagonist. Martin aptly blends Ben’s Navy SEAL expertise—weapons knowledge, mission planning, and hostage extraction—with a passionate lover. As a result, she create ...more

Kat Martin has definitely raised the bar as series go with 'Against the Edge'. The third book in the Against series has all the romance and intrigue as the Book 1 and Book 2, while keeping the readers sitting on the edge of their seats in anticipation of each next event as the pages are turned.

"I'm going to find my son. It doesn't matter if he's run away or if this guy Bridger took him. The minute I saw that picture, I had no other choice."

Against the Edge is book number eight in the Against series. You don’t need to read the others in any order as they stand alone just fine.

Former Navy SEAL Ben Slocum receives the shock of his life when a stranger appears on his doorstep announcing that a child he didn’t even know he had is missing. Claire Chastain is a friend of the boy’s late mother and is desperate to find him and seeks Ben’s help. They band together to track down the kidnapper, all the while trying to fight the attraction the
4.5 Each book in the Raines of Wind Canyon features an ex-military alpha-male who is perfect in every way but slightly flawed in the commitment department. They work in security or as private investigators and ultimately fall for a strong, independent woman. Kat Martin dishes up great suspense virtually guaranteeing me an engaging read with swoon worthy characters. She mixes in some romance, a little heat and a few giggles. She raised the bar with Against the Edge, this was intense, sweet and ke ...more
Wow is all I can say after this edge of the seat ride Ms. Martin delivers in AGAINST THE EDGE. With her trademark writing style, Ms. Martin pulls out all the stops as she tells a tale of a confirmed bachelor finding he has a child, one that needs his help desperately. Add in a few twists that leave you gasping in shock, well lets just say Ben and Claire are in a race against the clock to find this little boy before it is too late. I love Ms. Martin’s Raines of Wind Canyon series and each book de ...more

Against the Edge by Kat Martin
Ben Slocum has fathered a child he didn't know he had and here is Claire the social worker-friend of the mother who's passed away informing him the child's been kidnapped.
Love this series and the meticulous thinking and uncovering clues to find the child. He's an ex-Seal and has friends that are as highly trained as him.
Love catching up with the others in the family and the travel involved as the main focus takes you places you've never been.
Caring story as the fath

In Martin’s suspense novel, navy SEAL Ben Slocum is shocked to learn that he’s a father. Once the shock wears off, social worker Claire Chastain tells him the rest: his son is missing and Ben is his only chance. Fighting an attraction they have no time for, the duo heads out in pursuit of the kidnappers. As danger moves close to home, Ben is forced to admit that he will do anything to save his family.

A well spun story told by a master of the genre.

A good story but not a favourite in the series of mine. To me the story didn't flow properly and felt very rushed in parts, and I didn't like the character of Ben, I felt he was to bull- headed and unforgiving of his past. Claire to me was much to naive and kept to many secrets to allow the relationship to develop.
The background story of the white supremacists was well researched ( as Kat does do well).
I will continue to read the series as I have enjoyed it, this just wasn't a favourite for me.

I am so thankful that I was introduced to Ms. Martin’s books last year. This is the second book I have read of hers and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the Raines of Wind Canyon because these are the kind of books that make for a wonderful reading experience.

Former Navy Seal Ben Slocum arrives home from a wedding to find social worker Claire Chastain on his doorstep. She has some startling information for him. His ex-fiancé is dead and she left behind a son named Sam. He has been ki
4.25 out of 5. Another edgy novel (no pun intended) in a series that has continued to please those of us who really like these novels and the people who continue to fascinate and keep us involved in their lives. Furthermore, it's a fascinating look at a life and culture that isn't usually a part of romance novels unless they're paranormals or some such, and here the hero comes up against the hard-nosed and very intractible attitudes of those who are dead set against a world outside their own lim ...more

Wow! It has been a long time since I have read a book by Kat Martin, and I forgot how amazing her books are! Navy SEAL Ben Slocum receives a visit from a beautiful woman informing him that his ex fiancé has died, and his son is now missing. Ben and Claire race to save the son he never knew. There is plenty of heat in this book, and lots of action too. Don't miss it!
Another fast paced romantic suspense in the series. Did not disappoint. Several crimes needed to be solved and were by story's end. Lots of twists and turns. Ben and Claire sizzle. Reunited with those that Ben works with in security plus others. Several happily ever afters by the end and epilogue tied up the loose ends. Look forward to the next book in the series.
