Animals are definitely Jan Brett's artistic strength. The horses in this story are gorgeous and Fritz the little pony is precious! I loved his scruffy little fur. Her people aren't quite as strong. The story was just so-so for me - sweet, but predictable and the moral wasn't very satisfying.
“Fritz and the Beautiful Horses” is another children’s book for the beautiful mind of Jan Brett and it is about how a not so pretty pony named Fritz proves to the haughty town of beautiful horses that anyone who has a good heart and is dependable can be beautiful no matter what. “Fritz and the Beautiful Horses” is definitely one of the best books about true beauty and courage that children will love for many years!

The artwork in this book deserved a million stars, honestly. Then, I also loved the story. Any person, young or old, who likes horses and ponies will love this book.
Trust me!
I'm an artist AND a horse-lover, I know what I'm talking about <wink>
Hugs to you,

It was a good book. Fritz is a boy pony who is not beautiful but I think he is cute. The horses lived in a city. Fritz took the boys and girls across the river to the other side then he got to stay in the city. --Ella 7/11
I loved this book as a little girl and I love it now (and so does my 2 year old son.) Jan Brett's illustrations are breathtaking. The story is timeless and so cute. Seriously, every child should read this book.
The story is almost secondary in comparison to the illustrations of fat, shaggy, happy Fritz, skipping along next to the much more aloof horses.
It's official. I need a pony.

Well Defined Story Problem
Well Defined Story Problem
A great hero story, and the pony is very cute in the illustrations. The book has an older (time-wise, not age) feel to the story and the pictures. I love Jan Brett, but sometimes I think her stories might read too slowly for story time audiences. At least for an older one who are squirmy after a whole day of school. Perhaps I will Book Talk this one instead. It's too good to pass up. I was a little disappointed that the town didn't learn the greater part of the lesson on outer and inner beauty. ...more

Such a beautiful story about how good looks aren't everything, and how it's the heart that counts most.

This is my FAVORITE book by Jan Brett. The illustrations of the horses are amazing (horses are VERY hard to draw. My mom (the elementary school librarian) bought this book for Lindsey. She said one of the teachers at her school wrote to Jan, telling her how much her kids like her stories. Jan wrote her back and told her how she comes up with the stories and her inspirations. I thought that was great! I immediately went to the library and checked out The Hat and The Mitten....both wonderful!
I had this book as a child, or else it was a favorite to check out at the library. Fantastic book. I found it randomly one day while subbing, and read it to a class whose teacher was running late. I hadn't seen it in years, but it was just as great as I remember it. Everyone loved it! It was so much fun.
This is a lovely story. It's a Jan Brett book so you know the illustrations are wonderful.
In this story we learn how everyone is special and everyone has a purpose. And the little guy is the hero. My kids love to listen to it and I like to read it. One of the better stories out there for kids.

This is one of my favorite children's books! I don't own it, but I remember checking it out from the library at one time and just being facinated with it. The artwork in it is fantastic! The story is adorable as well. One of these days I'm going to have that book in my collection for my own children.

Fritz is not beautiful, and so is shunned, but then the children are in need and he saves the day. Good for teaching that we need to include everyone - everyone has something to give.
Beautifully illustrated, used to stare at the pictures (that are very detailed for a childern's book) and examine them, deciding which horse I wanted and elaborate saddle.
My sister Shelley clearly has a gift for selecting fun, interesting children's books. She sent this to Catherine for her birthday. Great message and illustrations.
The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous! It is about a town known for it's beautiful horses, and a not-so beautiful outsider, named Fritz. Very sweet.
This may be my favorite Jan Brett books. It's not as popular as some of her other books. However, it's such a sweet story and the children love it.
One of my favorite books. I've always loved it. It has amazing illustrations and a really cute story. A must-read!
