"My heart is tormented about prisons and the people who occupy them."

Yousef Khanfar photographed the women of the Oklahoma state prison system, which has the highest incarceration rate for women per capita in the world.

The overriding subtext to all these convictions is substance abuse. Even when it's not the direct cause of incarceration, it's certainly a driving force behind the criminal act.
