The New York Times, The Times of the Seventies: The Culture, Politics, and Personalities that Shaped the Decade, edited by Clyde Haberman is a three hundred and sixty page pictorial history of the the 1970s. The decade unfolds in New York Times articles and pictures.

It is an amazing decade put into a heavily illustrated book. It was a decade of very high highs and low lows. 18 year olds got the right to vote, but still were forced to die in Vietnam. Capital punishment was declared unconstitutio

The New York Times Presents:

The Times of the Seventies edited with commentary by Clyde Haberman

It's not until you begin to examine an entire decade that you realize just how much changed in a ten year span of time. As all the developments from the previous decade still reverberated though the consciousness of Americans, the fallout had only just begun. The early seventies saw riots, the trial of the “Chicago seven” and Woodstock. College campuses were war zones, the Vietnam war raged on with no

This book is a collection of stories that appeared in The New York Times during the 1970s. I graduated from high school in 1971 and got married in 1976, so this book was a real treat for me. The stories and the photos were a real trip down memory lane. I enjoyed reading things about Watergate, Kent State, Three Mile Island, the Camp David accords, the gas shortage and the hostage crisis, leisure suits, the Bicentennial, the Beatles breakup, the beginnings of HBO, People magazine and SNL. I could ...more

The main events of the 1970's as they were depicted in articles from the New York Times. This is a wonderful jaunt through history, with all the events we remember as kids but now can fully appreciate as adults. It's amazing to think that items such as home computer, cell phones, etc had their earliest origins in the Me Decade. The book tends to be a little New York centric, ther is even a chapter on New York in the Seventies, but it is a minor quibble. Looking forward to reading the other books ...more

Provides historical context of the decade through newspaper articles at the time. This book is divided into several subsections; news, medicine, religion, technology, etc., but every major event of the 1970s is here. Interesting perspectives for the time (ie. All in the Family won't be successful) but all in all a good reference source.

Enjoyed this trip down memory lane so much that now I want to read the NY Times books about the Sixties and the Eighties.

Much like the one on the 60s, this was a great in depth look at the culture of the 1970s.
