Cricket Kings, the first novel by William McInnes, is set in late summer in suburban Victoria. The Yarraville West Fourths, a team cobbled together by Chris Andersen, are playing their last game of the season against Trinity on the Cec Bull Memorial Oval. I really, really enjoyed this book. In fact it surprised me how much I enjoyed it.
McInnes has a wonderful way of capturing australian quirks and lifestyles in a way that is heart warming and enjoyable. There is no cringe or outright put-down about our own stereotypes - I particularly liked the bit about hard rubbish collection. This books was a nice read, that left you warm and fuzzy and loving being australian! It is also a very easy read but not fluffy. My husband is now enjoying this and it i...more

I'm not a cricket fan but I really enjoyed this book. I actually laughed out loud a couple of times. Very Australian, very QLD.
