Mr. Bliss
Mr. Bliss's first outing in his new motor-car, shared with several friends, bears, dogs, and a donkey, though not the Girabbit, proves to be unconventional though not inexpensive.

Mr. Bliss is delightfully amusing, both the book and the title character himself. He gets himself into a series of farcical scrapes involving his new car, three thuggish teddy bears, four obese brothers, some cabbages and some bananas. Mr. Bliss is a frightful coward throughout, not at all the hero you might expect, which I think would make him a rather sympathetic character for younger children. He does stand up for himself in the end, albeit in a somewhat passive/aggressive way. Oh, and watch...more
This delightful children's book by the creator of The Lord of the Rings is a minor gem, pleasantly illustrated by the author. Mr. Bliss decides to buy a motorcar, and mayhem results. Tolkien clearly had little love for motorcars or the modern era in general, preferring the old English countryside, horses, and Sunday strolls.
The book takes pot shots at fat people, bears, and tradesmen, and so it's a little too quirky and non-inclusive for the modern era. We like our fat people, our tradesmen and...more

Is this a poignant piece of literary greatness? No. Was it written exquisitely with riveting action and dialouge? No. Not by any means. But Mr. Bliss still captured my heart, if for no other reason than it's the first book I've read in a long time that made feel like there was someone sitting on the edge of my bed telling me a story before I go to sleep. It's pure, childlike simplicity is just... charming and Tolkien's writing style can take just as much credit for this as the bizarre storyline...more
A lovely little Sunday afternoon light-read.
Loved it. I am, however quite bias. I'm a big Tolkien fan, and I'll read anything that his colourful imagination can conjure.
It's a bright and animated children's book about the adventures of a tall hat wearing dandy names Mr. Bliss, and his spontaneous inspiration to buy a motorcar, and the trouble there ensues.
Aside from the playfulness of story and many delightful characters, the book is worth buying simply for its hand-crafted illustrations by the...more

The delightful Mr Bliss was cute and in a way just like the way Tolkien wrote The Hobbit, funny, like a posh English narrator with a good sense of humour. Also, the real illustrations by J.R.R Tolkien further enhanced the reading knowing Tolkien's almost - in a stupid-sounding way - with you? There isn't really a big plot; just Mr Bliss buying a car then picking up people along the way after he knocks them down in a road trip type way, until everyone wrongly claims he owes them large amounts of...more
This is an illustrated children's book that Tolkien wrote for his own children. It was not published until after his death. Each page has a photostat of the actual handwritten book by Tolkien. His handwriting looks remarkably...Elvish :-)
This was a odd little story, a read aloud to Emma. Long for a children's picture book, but it completely captivated her. Not a lot in the way of plot, and in that way very much unlike his other great works. But he has delightful and memorable characters, especia...more

Herra Bliss on kaikilla tavoin hämmentävä satu.

What an odd little tale! Not at all what I was expecting. This is a non sense tale, with no real plot. I suspect it was written for the enjoyment of Tolkien's own kids, and that they would have found it extremely entertaining - a story written by Dad! I have no doubt that most children would enjoy this silly story, but since it has no meaning or message that I can decipher, I would not choose to read it to my children, when there are so many other spiritual fairy-tales out there. Just my persona...more
A delightfully quirky and surreal children's book by Tolkien. It made little sense but was charming and funny. As an added benefit, we received a visit from Old Gaffer Gamgee. Despite the very small pictures, I was able to read the entire book to my 23 month old - quite an achievement for any book of that length.
A charming, self-illustrated children's story from J. R. R. Tolkien! Funny and quintessentially British, an unexpected treat for children and adult's alike.
